Trip Report: 7/2/19-7/9/19

Introduction:

A few months before a trip I’m usually become pretty active on this sub, spending a decent amount of time helping people plan out trips. I figured for once I’d share one of my planned itineraries, what actually happened on the trip, how much I expected it to cost, how much it actually cost, changes since my last trip, and any highlights.

Demo:

Married couple, late 20s, 17th trip to Vegas.

Planned Itinerary:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vTwil88ghO5M8CLdwNaXSg8eOo5fqZwhXSZpv20K2TlYJEPzBdUqBvC8Dq7jmSfZ5uB6UE-SMu0zZ6n/pubhtml

Actual Itinerary:

Things to get out of the way:

Immediately people are going to jump at the fact that I have things planned down to the 5 minute mark. These are rough estimates, usually made in an attempt to make sure that we get to everything we are wanting to do in a day, or so that some deadline is reached on time, such as a restaurant closing or a club entrance cutoff. Typically we are somewhere between on time and an hour late depending on whether or not a deadline is involved. I didn’t change every single time to the actual time on the “Actual Itinerary” since that would have been way too much work, but if something got skipped, added, or things went drastically off the rails it was noted.
With regard to the cost predictions going down to the penny, before we go to a restaurant we typically look at the menu online and then we know what we’re ordering beforehand. It isn’t particularly hard to add tax and tip and then know the exact amount. We typically change things up a few times and that’s why I included the actual costs on the Actual Itinerary. Some of the predicted values are closer to guesses, but I typically added tax and tip to those to help keep it accurate as I could.
The next thing that people are going to question is the fact that we switch hotels 4 times in 7 days. I would never argue that it’s particularly convenient to do that but with the comped room I had at Bellagio, the comped/reduced rate I had at Wynn, and then the comped room my wife had at Wynn, along with our varied itinerary, it was worthwhile to hop around a bit. Bellhops are your friends, always tip them and they’ll treat you right, that is if they decide to help at all (looking at you MGM and Planet Hollywood). The reason for the Gold Coast was we were planning on checking out KAOS, but due to lineup changes we ended up changing our plans. We got a great price for the night, so we just kept it.
The final thing that I know people are going to jump at is the fact that we eat at McDonald’s 4 times during the trip. After 3am, when the clubs are starting to wind down, there are very few food options open in Vegas. Most are overpriced for what you get, or in inconvenient locations. Usually we are drunk, and dead tired, so spending lots of time or money to get food is just a waste. 3 out of the 4 times were at 3:45am because their dinner menu cutoff is 4am, and why go to McDonald’s when you can’t get chicken nuggets. The last one is because it’s literally right across the street at Palms. For the past few years we’d get delivery Thai Pepper, which was absolutely fantastic drunk food that was surprisingly cheap and available even later in the night, but they’ve closed, and I haven’t seen any particularly appealing alternatives.

Changes to Vegas since early September 2018

- Thai Pepper closed - Encore Beach Club’s poles were removed from the center island + Block 16 Urban Food Hall opened + Urth Caffé opened = KAOS opened

Stats:

Predicted units of alcohol to be consumed: 136.5 Actual units of alcohol consumed: Somehow more

Hotels:

Bellagio: Always thought of Bellagio as probably impressive until Wynn, CityCenter, and Cosmopolitan were built. Still think this. Room was fine, but not worth anywhere near the price point if it wasn’t comped. Maybe if you spring for a view of the fountains it’d be different, but at the price I’d still think Cosmo is a better option.
Wynn: Having stayed at Encore multiple times, and loving it every time, Wynn was actually really disappointing. I thought I’d just be complaining about the white and cream color scheme and the open layout with the weird TV placement, but the real problems were the room fragrance and lack of power outlets.
My wife didn’t find the odor particularly unpleasant but to me it had an uncanny similarity to cowshit. Almost decided to switch rooms, but was too tired and busy, and it turned out our later stay at another Wynn room on a different floor, facing a different side, had the same smell, so it seems to be property-wide. Looking online they seem to have a room fragrance that just isn’t compatible with me somehow.
The lack of power outlets made charging our phones, my watch, and her laptop practically impossible and was just something I hadn’t even considered could be a problem in a high-end hotel. The lack of power outlets anywhere even remotely close to the TV meant I couldn’t connect her laptop to the TV and power at the same time, even with a 10 ft. HDMI cable.
Having become used to Google Home at home, traveling is always a bit disappointing when you can’t just ask for the lights to turn off or an alarm to be set. This should be standard in all hotels, with very clear ways to disable it for the privacy conscious. Sadly Wynn’s implementation of Alexa is absolutely terrible. One room it worked about half the time, with me often resorting to their perfectly usable touch panel. The other room it never worked.
Gold Coast: Wish I had time to take advantage of the cheap bowling. Perfectly serviceable basecamp if you wanting to spend time at Palms or are using Uber to get around, although we could never get it quite to the right temperature. An absolute steal at $71.25 before taxes and resort fee on a Saturday of a summer holiday weekend.
Planet Hollywood: I’ve always been pretty harsh to Planet Hollywood, arguing why would you stay there when you can spend a reasonable amount more to stay at Cosmo or spend drastically less money and stay at either Harrah’s, Linq, or the Flamingo? For me the answer was when Cosmo is having some sort of event that causes the price to be 2-3x normal, and you were planning on hitting up Cosmo’s food options and Marquee Monday.
Our Ultra Resort Room was actually quite nice with a large layout, plenty of power outlets, and a bathroom with 2 completely separate mirror and sink areas. The only real problem was the cleanliness was the worst I’ve seen in Vegas since the Linq was the Imperial Palace. Every glass or mirrored surface had smudges, the carpet had a large stain in the middle, and the stack of ads and magazines was sticky. You’ll see one of those problems at almost any hotel room in Vegas that isn’t a luxury property, but it’s been years since I’ve stayed in a room that felt this unclean.
Ultimately it’s convenient access to Cosmo makes it occasionally a good option, but from what I’ve seen only if you have time to potentially request they deep clean your room. Had Cosmo had a more average price I’d still think the upgrade to there is worth it.

Highlights

Exodus Pass Usually we do guest list or presale tickets to pool parties and nightclubs depending on various factors. This year we were planning on July 4th weekend to take advantage of the day off work, and that happened to coincide with one of the Exodus Festival weekends. We bought tickets early, and it came to only $147.55 after taxes and fees and a promo code. With the later guaranteed entry and the quickness of entry, this was an absolute steal. 10/10, would do again. My biggest complaint is their wristband booth in MGM Grand is not the most convenient and quick location to pick up your wristbands. They should probably setup one at the hotel hosting their first event, and not just their first nighttime event.
Twilight Zone Mini Golf was fun and inexpensive, a growing rarity in Vegas.
Urth Caffe is now my northend recommendation for breakfast in Vegas. Great food, and generous size of their drinks.
While Caesars’ 4th of July fireworks show was great, the impressive thing was the sheer amount of illegal fireworks going off all over town. I know some of you have strong negative opinions about them, but having never seen anything like it, it was impressive.
Marquee had silent disco in the Library which is always a fun experience.
Block 16 has some fantastic food at great prices. Special shoutout to Hattie B’s seasoned fries, the perfect drunk food.
First time at an airport lounge. Free drinks after security, but before you fly is an absolute gamechanger.

Room for Improvement

LAS Uber Pickup The 2M Uber pickup floor at LAS is completely fucked. There’s just no other way to put it. It’s always been bad, but now there are concrete barriers that make it where far too many people are trying to move through the unblocked areas. Plenty of airports do this better, hopefully someone with some power thinks about the fact that this hard to find, hot, dark, congested place isn’t the best way to start off people’s trips. If I had time to go to Total Wine and Reef I definitely would have taken Presidential Limo, which picks up in a tolerable place.
Apex While Ghostbar always had a view going for it, Ghostbar Dayclub was well liked due to it’s personality. Apex still has the view, but the vibe was just completely non-existent. Hopefully now that Apex is under control by Stations/KAOS they can make it not just a generic bar with a great view, but from what I can tell it’s still being neglected.
Reef Weed Tender Don’t get all offended that I’m not wanting to chitchat. I called in the order, and am trying to make this transaction quickly, since I have an Uber waiting outside and don’t want to waste his time.
Drai’s Guest List We ended up skipping Drai’s on the 4th of July. $75/$50 for guest list for Big Sean seemed worth it to a lot of people who weren’t us. Got in line, found the price, got out of line. I had heard from a friend that Drai’s promoters have lately been advertising free entry and yet were charging even groups of all girls, so I wasn’t expecting free, but $125 for a couple was too steep for a week filled with as many pool parties as we had. Felt sorry for anyone expecting to get in for free and finding that mess, especially if they were on a shorter trip. Promoters should stop promising free if it’s only going to be reduced, accurate communication is key.
Masala 24/7 Indian food is a great idea in Vegas, and a location near Tacos El Gordo is even better. That said, I don’t find anything too oily, imagine the most deep fried thing you can and it’s soaking through 10 napkins and a paper bag and I’d be like “This tastes great,” and yet Masala was somehow too oily, Their naan also wasn’t crispy and had a doughy texture. My wife also found their food too salty. Overall not worth trying out, even if it should be good in theory.

Future

Originally when I was writing this I talked about not coming again for awhile, but somehow ended up with a trip August 22nd-27th.

My upcoming Las Vegas wedding Mega thread with all the tips and tricks I learned from youtube and reading all your threads in r/vegas + sidebar and then some!

So over a year ago we got engaged and went down the path of trying to plan a wedding. We keep getting frustrated with every turn and it seemed like everyone was trying to nickle and dime us charging us outrageous rates for what should be common things. As time went on we keep joking "lets just say screw it and get married in vegas" .. Then one day we actually looked at what they offered. OMG were we shocked! The best part. VEGAS HAS THEIR ACT TOGETHER ON WEDDINGS!. They have full packages and they are not cheesy but can be very classy / elegant!
So now the time has come and I'm getting married next week same week as EDC in Las Vegas (Woo hoo from visitors and 1 handed clap from locals right!)
I am going to break down everything I have learned in the last 6 months on how to do this trip right on a moderate but not broke budget (less than 10k with plenty of breathing room) and share what our plans are! I will upload a video journal after everything is done if people are interested.
1st. Venue-
If you are doing a wedding lock in your Venue first. I almost suggest you pick your wedding day around when the venue you want is available! You can't make any other plans with out knowing this first!. Figure out where you want it. You don't have to do Elvis and there are way more options than you would think. Want to get married in front of a shark tank. You can do that. For us we wanted to get married at the bellagio and they even offer packages where they shoot off the fountains on your first kiss. (skip to 11:00) Be sure and read the contracts / prices and reviews to see what others said. We found we could have our wedding at the Bellagio for $2,000 and it included just about everything we needed for the ceremony. Only kicker was we have to use THEIR florist and THEIR in house photographer who are way over priced but our package came with some default items and that's all we needed. So 2 grand got us venue , minister, floral, and photographer + they give you a gift basket and have a limo take you to get your marriage licence. So not a bad deal for @ the Bellagio (please note try not to book your weddings on busy days if you want to save money in general we booked our wedding before EDC announced they were having their gig the same week, turns out EDC week is like the 3rd busiest week of the year)
"update- The wedding was awesome but the walk to the venue sucked. The photographer was kinda a scam as the next day we were only able to buy 3 photo's the pre printed and never received our package ones. You have to do that online later and have yet to receive them"
2nd. Reception-
Now most would think you would need to have the reception at the same hotel as your wedding. However you do not have to and this is where the costs rise very quickly at the really nice places to get married. All the strip hotels are very expensive and have a minimum head count / price per plate fee with booking a banquet room. So we found that doing the reception at the Fremont hotel was much more affordable. I got a 2 entree of our choice w 4 sides + cake dinner package with a open bar for $3,000 for 50 people for 4 hours. I would have spent that and then some in my home town. Having it on fremont also opens up the ability for us to have fun and take pictures with the actors out side with our grandparents and so on who can't walk so well after our reception ends. Seriously how cool is that!
"update"- this room was awesome and the staff and venue was great.Biggest shocker was the food was really 1st class and they really keep the drinks flowing for cheap. We never even used our full liquor budget so i just gave the left over amount as a extra tip to the staff
3rd. Transportation-
To get everyone from the Bellagio to fremont I was able to book 2 buses and a limo for the bridal party for around $250 turn key using https://www.belllimousine.com/fleet-rates/ This includes champagne in the limo. Seriously getting 50 ppl from one hotel to another is no joke so please don't forget this step.
Update = we also used taxi's for everthing and spent on avg 15 bucks including tip for us to go anywhere we liked other than the race track. we only had 3 ppl long haul us out of over 20+ trips . Bell tras was awesome and took care of all my people perfectly 4th. DJ's
I was highly shocked that vegas doesn't have more wedding DJ's. They have tons of EDM Dj's. However actual wedding dj's / Master of ceremony is slim pickings and most are super douches. I ended up going with a guy named Mike Fox who is from England and used to be a local radio DJ and was just very nice to work with, being pleasant and making us smile. His website format was perfect for setting up music lists + he could rip songs from youtube being just very internet tech savy in general. He also accepts payments via paypal invoice even. Our cost was $600 for 4 hours
Update= Mike fox was awesome and I would highly recommend. We had 3 pro DJ's in our wedding group from Texas and they all agreed he was a great DJ. Very funny and he had the whole place having fun and dancing using inflatable props they could pass around.
5th. Hotels
Now that you have the venue set you need a place for you and everyone else to stay right! . Don't think just because you are having your wedding at a place, that is where you have to stay there or think that they will cut you a better deal. Because they won't. In fact the best they can do in most cases is "upgrade" or give the bride and groom a discount if they book so many rooms using a promo code / friends and family rate. The wedding people have no say over any other department and this is a huge flaw as there is a major disconnect here we found. MGM Lost out on the majority of our groups sales because of this.
So unless you want to screw over all your friends and family Caesers is the way to go! If you have not already, make sure you and your whole crew sign up for caesers TR cards ASAP!!! it doesn't mater if you have any play on your cards you just have to have them for over 6 months. After that time you get mega discounts. On your rooms Caesers lets you combine player cards for room discounts after you sign in . Once me and my bride added both our TR numbers to the TR site we got our rooms comped only having to pay resort fees at basically any hotel of our choice other than Caesers palace or Nobu they require the 2nd teir points for comps. WE GOT THIS THE WHOLE WEEK OF EDC June 11th - June 18th. So what did we do.. Well we split up where we were staying to have some fun! The first few nights were at the Rio in free rooms and even booked a 2nd free room the night of our bachelor /ett parties that way we don't see each other before the wedding. Then we decided to splurge one night by staying at a spa suite at the Monte carlo because it has a 2 person tub that sits right in front of a window over looking the strip and a steam shower for $130 with our meager Mlife discount. Finally going to another free strip view room at the flamingo for the last few days because why the hell not (this was my girls hotel choice btw.) Total room cost for the full week of EDC = under $400 turn key booked 2 months in advance! Keep in mind out of our whole party .. like 30+ ppl got free rooms this way having 0 play on their cards. Only the people who enrolled late didn't get this promo and some found palace station and the linq were the cheapest best fit for them. However it's vegas so we told everyone "Stay were you like... but we know this trick!" I hear it sometimes works, but are not even gonna bother with the $20 trick as we got the exact rooms we wanted for FREE!
(Because people wanted proof of this as of right now June 9th 2016 just a few days before the week of EDC these are the rates i get using this trick)
Rio -http://imgur.com/a/Axiiq
Paris- http://imgur.com/iTJoPsf
Planet hollywood https://imgur.com/WkMLVtZ
"update = We ended up staying extra days and stayed at the Rio, flamingo , planet Hollywood, monte carlo and Cosmo. Honestly we def felt like the rio had the best bang for the buck. The floor the ceiling windows were nice and with a strip view it just looked pretty. The PH room we had had a small window but it had a picture perfect view Our least fav was the flamingo as well it was just outdated and had a motel 6 bathroom. Cosmo we felt like was way over priced for what you got. Monte Carlo was nice but the room and floor we were on were clearly old and dilapidated.
6th. Date night / food-
So before we start the whole wedding thing I wanted to have a romantic alone day with my lady. So Sunday I booked us to have brunch at the sterling buffet This is a all you can eat lobster / king crab , caviar with champagne. It is very high priced, but lets just say I am excited and gonna try and get my moneys worth! We plan on derping around the strip after that doing some shopping. I have lined up where we are having Dinner at the Eiffel Tower restaurant and surprisingly contacted Chef Joho on facebook and was able to get something special made for us and got us a table over looking the fountains at the Bellagio and them to have a rose on the table for my lady!. Now these guys an tell you the exact time of the sunset for any day in las vegas months out. So you can book your table right as the view is best. (food cost aprox $450 for brunch and dinner.. OMG i know right.. but .. So NOM!)
After that by playing the Myvegas slots on Facebook or mobile for just a few days for free I was able to get a Buy One Get one free premium tickets to KA along with Buy one Get one free monorail to get from paris to MGM (total cost $100) Honestly Myvegas is only good for bogo's on buffets, resturants, and shows + a tshirt at palace station. I tried booking hotel rooms at discounted rates but found out... yea .. they won't let you pick dates and is alas another MGM scam. So if you play myvegas don't hold your breath on the hotel rooms as they will cock block you.
All in all I think it's gonna be a cool night We will do some shopping and have some fun!
update = The Eiffel tower was by far our best dining experience. Chef Joho's team really went the extra mile and gave us a free signed cook book and my wife a charm bracelet that she loves. The food was unlike anything I have ever had. Words can not express and the view was breathtaking. The sterling was pretty awesome but honestly the deserts were the best part lol. We actually tried every major buffet in vegas that week and My recommendation is wicked spoon at the cosmo. Everything was really good and the deserts were awesome. 7th. Bachelo ette parties !!!
GUY STUFF! ... For us guys we are starting out by having me drive a Mclaren supercar at Exotic racing I think a few of my grooms men may drive a car too or at least I will buy the drift car experience for them $100.
Then we are headed to a brewery tour at Bangers Brewery to drink some beer. . after that we are going to derp around then go to las vegas's only fully nude strip club with liquor
Then I got a Vegas local youtuber and bouncehost Jacob Orth to hook us up with limo service to the Hustler club with a bottle service deal. Honestly this guy rocks! So hit him up for any questions you have for bachelor parties. He can set you up with deals for just about any club in town as he is a host. Also something very interesting and important this guy taught me was have the clubs pick you up in their limos because all the cab/ubelyft /limo drivers get a kick back on anyone they drop off to the clubs and same with the VIP card guys! So if you don't use the free limo ... THE CLUB HAS TO CHARGE YOU A COVER!!! If you use the clubs FREE limo service they can sometimes wave that cover charge!! (that's like $20 a person!) I really can't say enough good things about Jacob so hit him up!
We are ending the night by watching the riviera demo from either the rooftop of the Rio or over by circus circus.
Update= exotic racing was awesome. Something I and my groomsmen will never forget. Bangers brewery tour sucked. However the food vendor on the patio was awesome lol They did have a coffee beer that was good though. Strip clubs were what you would expect. Some of the girls were very pushy but meh. We had one man who didn't want to leave.
Girl STUFF
The girls are starting the night out with a pole dancing strip tease class that includes a limo service and club crawl. They are also seeing the chip n dales show at the rio. The maid of honor worked out a deal where they have a escort / host that takes them from club to club and gets them past the lines, gets them drinks and all that. Then if they are still standing after that they will meet up with us guys to watch the riviera implosion. I don't know what all they are fully doing but i'm sure they will have fun!
That's all pretty generic stuff but for you ladies reading this I am going to give another secret we found for the wedding that is good to know.
My bride is having a professional makeup and hair artist come and do air brush makeup and updo's at their hotel room. The cost was around $145 a person. This is way cheaper than using the in house salons not to mention they come to your room! The more people who use this service the cheaper it gets per person!
As a small token gesture my bride got her bridal party all vegas clutches + jewelry from amazon and I think they are cool!
Other things we plan on doing if we can. Eating at the bacchanal buffet Maybe check out sweets raku for some unique deserts
of course tons of window shopping and exploring and if we have time shoot some guns and enjoy some of the pools at the hotels!
If you are still reading this and haven't figured it out yet. Most user's best yet very serious tips / things to know are.
  1. Don't Jay walk!
  2. Wear good shoes
  3. Stay cool and drink plenty of water
  4. Beware of scammers
  5. Don't get Trickrolled
  6. Don't come to Vegas because your on vacation but stay because your on probation
Remember this is not a list of what you have to do but what we are doing after 6+ months of hard research. I want to thank the reddit community of vegas I have read every post from the last 6 months and every side bar item. It's because of your suggestions I was able to lock in what few things I knew i wanted to do for sure .
last .. treat your trip as a vacation. leave your self plenty of free time to derp around and just do what comes naturally even from other people in your "group" alone time is good! . Please be safe and if you have any questions I will try to answer them or I'm sure others will!
Last update/after thoughts. - Honestly we had a great trip and stayed a few extra days. In that time we also went and seen shows and did random stuff. I we seen Ka and that was pretty awesome but the MGM was skechy to us. We also seen "beatles love" and I almost wouldn't recommend it as the show is ok but the story sucked and the theater sucked with tiny chairs. Zumanity was pretty cool but out of the 3 I would go see Ka first. We don't regret anything and again I would seriously recommend looking at vegas as a serious option for anyone who wants a cheaper but classy wedding.

(discussion) Our Vegas wedding on a moderate budget tips and tricks mega thread!

6thDate night / food.
So before we start the whole wedding thing I wanted to have a romantic alone day with my lady. So Sunday I booked us to have brunch at the sterling buffet This is a all you can eat lobster / king crab , caviar with champagne. It is very high priced, but lets just say I am excited! OMG i know right.. but .. So NOM!)
After that by playing the Myvegas slots on Facebook or mobile for just a few days for free I was able to get a Buy One Get one free premium tickets to KA along with Buy one Get one free monorail to get from paris to MGM (total cost $100) Honestly Myvegas is only good for bogo's on buffets, restaurants, and shows + a tshirt at palace station.
7th Bachelo ette parties !!!
Lets be real. Who wouldn't like their bachelor party to be in vegas!
GUY STUFF! ... For us guys we are starting out by having me drive a Mclaren super car at exotic racing - http://www.exoticsracing.com/driving-experience I think a few of my grooms men may drive a car too or atleast do the drift car for $100.
Then we are headed to a brewery tour at Bangers Brewery to drink some beer. . after that we are going to derp around then go to las vegas's only fully nude strip club
Then I got a local youtuber and bouncer Jacob Orth to hook us up with limo service to the Hustler club with a bottle service deal. Honestly this guy rocks! so hit him up for any questions you have for a bachelor party Something very interesting and important this guy taught me was have the clubs pick you up in their limos because all the cab/ubelyft /limo drivers get a kick back on anyone they drop off to the clubs and same with the VIP card guys! So if you use them ... THE CLUB HAS TO CHARGE YOU A COVER!!! If you use the clubs FREE limo service they can wave that cover charge!!
We are ending the night by watching the riviera demo from either the rooftop of the Rio or over by circus circus.
Then if they are still standing they will meet up with us guys to watch the riviera implosion. I don't know exactly what all they are doing but i'm sure they will have fun!
That's all pretty generic stuff but for you ladies reading this I am going to share some other secrets we found for the wedding that is good to know.
1st My bride is having a professional makeup and hair artist come and do air brush makeup and updo's at their hotel room. The cost was around $145 a person. This is way cheaper than using the in house salons not to mention they come to your room!
As a small token gesture my bride got her bridal party all vegas clutches + jewlry from amazon and I think they are cool!
Other things we plan on doing if we can. Eating at the bacchanal buffet Maybe check out sweets raku for some unique deserts
of course tons of window shopping and exploring and if we have time shoot some guns and enjoy some of the pools at the hotels!
If you are still reading this and don't know. most users best tips yet very serious things to know are.
  1. Don't Jay walk!
  2. Wear good shoes
  3. Stay cool and drink plenty of water
  4. Beware of scammers
  5. Don't come to vegas because your on vacation but stay because your on probation
Remember this is not a list of what you have to do but what we are doing after 6+ months of hard research. I want to thank the reddit community of vegas I have read every post from the last 6 months and every side bar item they had It's because of thier suggestions I was able to lock in what few things I knew i wanted to do for sure .
last .. treat your trip as a vacation. leave your self plenty of free time to derp around and just do what comes naturally even from other people in your "group" alone time is good! . Please be safe and if you have any questions I will try to answer them or I'm sure others will!
