Missing in Georgia #40: The Khan Sisters, Cassandra Landrum, Stephen Lankester-Cox, Virginia Lee, Mary Little [Unresolved Disappearance]

This is the fortieth entry in the Missing in Georgia series highlighting missing persons cases in the state of Georgia. Once a week (typically Monday) I will be posting 1-5 cases from Georgia's Charley Project page. I will move on to the unidentified after I make it through the missing. The last case I posted can be found here:

Ayesha Faheem and Fatima Faheem Khan were taken by Mehvish Salim Baig, their non-custodial mother on July 18th, 2009.A felony arrest warrant was filed on August 11th 2009. They all left Evans, GA and have not been heard from since then. It is possible Baig took the girls to Pakistan. Baig has citizenship status in the United States, Pakistan, and the United Arab Emirates. The girls were around 5 and 9 years old when they were taken. Evans is a suburb of Augusta, GA, which lies on the border of South Carolina.

18 year old Cassandra Nadine Landrum left the family residence in Union City, GA to make the quick half block walk to a payphone at a local Dairy Queen. It was dusk on September 29th, 1975 when Landrum walked out barefoot to use the payphone, as the family land line was in use. Landrum was the youngest of six children. It was initially believed by authorities that Landrum had left voluntarily, but now foul play is being considered.
Multiple phone calls were placed to the Landrum home shortly after Cassandra's disappearance. The caller repeatedly claimed that Landrum had been murdered, sometimes in explicit detail. The identity of the caller remains unknown and the information provided by said caller has turned up no leads.
Union City lies just outside the southwestern tip of 285. It is just southwest of Atlanta proper. Southwest of College Park and north of Tyrone and Peachtree City.

Stephen Lankester-Cox was last seen at approximately 10:00 p.m. on November 18, 2004, leaving his mother's house in Acworth, Georgia. He received a phone call there from an unknown person. Steve's mother heard him say that he saw headlights from a car pulling into the driveway. He left shortly thereafter presumably with the person that pulled up. He stated he was going to the store and would return in a few minutes. He was never heard from again.
On January 1, 2005, six weeks after his disappearance, one of his Harley-Davidson boots was found in a wooded area near his home.
Authorities believe foul play was involved in Lankester-Cox's disappearance. They received information that he was planning to rob an illegal Cobb County gambling establishment on the night of his disappearance, and it is believed he was killed during the robbery or shortly afterwards. An attendant at the illegal game room allegedly reported a suspicious person in the area to police, but the person was gone when police arrived. (Why would someone involved with illegal gambling all police to the area?) No one has been charged in his case and it remains unsolved.

Virginia Lee was a few months shy of 62 when she disappeared on August 10th, 1985 from Midway, GA. Midway is a small coastal town between Savannah and Brunswick. She left her home sometime between 10:00 am and noon that day. Her grandchildren were the last people to see her. There are no photographs of Lee, but a sketch was created to add to the casefile. Searches of the area have turned up nothing. There are no further details.

This next case is fairly well known and has many twists and turns.
Mary Shotwell Little was a secretary at C&S Bank in Atlanta, Georgia in 1965. (The bank is now called Nation's Bank.) She married Roy Little, a bank examiner, six weeks prior to her disappearance. Roy was out of town on October 14, training to become an auditor, but was going to return the next day. Mary planned a party to welcome his return.
She purchased groceries after work and then met a co-worker for dinner at the Piccadilly Cafeteria in the Lenox Square Shopping Center in the upscale Buckhead neighborhood of Atlanta. Mary was reportedly in good spirits at the time and spoke happily about her married life. She walked back to her car after dinner around 8:00 p.m. She has never been heard from again.
Mary did not show up for work the next morning and did not call in sick. Her boss discussed her absence with the co-worker she'd dined with the previous evening. Mary's co-worker knew that Mary's new metallic pearl-gray 1965 Mercury Comet with the Georgia license plate number 2829 was parked in a lot near Lenox Square.
Initially the car could not be located by security guards, but by the time Mary's bank supervisor arrived at Lenox Square, the car was in plain sight where the coworker had indicated.
There was a coating of red dust on the car's exterior, as if it had been driven on a dirt road. Four bags of groceries were found inside the vehicle, along with Coke bottles and a package cigarettes of a brand that Mary liked.
There was also a slip, panties, girdle, bra, and a single stocking. Most of the items had been neatly folded and placed on the console between the front bucket seats, but the brassiere and the stocking were on the floor. The stocking had been cut, probably by a knife. The underwear was Mary's and appeared to have been worn recently. Mary's outer clothes, purse, coat, jewelry, and her car keys were missing and have never been found.
Blood was speckled on the undergarments and smeared on the steering wheel, the driver's side door near the handle, the inside window of the passenger's side, and on the front seats. Testing proved it was probably Mary's blood. There was only a very small amount, about as much as would come from a nosebleed.
Some police officers were of the opinion that the scene had been staged, due to the great smearing of the small quantity of blood. There was an unidentified fingerprint in the blood on the steering wheel.
Investigators learned that Mary's gasoline credit card had been used twice in North Carolina on October 15, the day following her disappearance. The first time was at an Esso station in Mary's hometown of Charlotte; the second time was at another Esso in Raleigh. Attendants at both stations recalled seeing a woman who appeared to have a minor injury to her head and was bloodstained on her head and legs.
Both workers told authorities that the woman was traveling with one or two unshaven middle-aged men who seemed to be commanding her. The woman appeared to be trying to hide her face from the attendants and she did not ask anyone for help.
The credit card had been used in the early morning hours of October 15 in Charlotte and approximately 12 hours later in Raleigh. This puzzled investigators; not only was Charlotte Mary's hometown and the city where her family resided, but Raleigh was only two to three hours away by car. The long span of time between credit card usages seemed strange, considering the short traveling distance between the cities.
Authorities speculate that perhaps whoever had Mary was trying to lead the investigation away from Atlanta. The signatures on the credit slips read "Mrs. Roy H. Little Jr." and appeared to be in Mary's handwriting. Using Roy's mileage logs and Mary's odometer, investigators estimated that the car had been driven only 41 miles that could not be accounted for.
Another odd angle of Mary's case emerged when the license plate on her Mercury Comet turned out to be a Charlotte, North Carolina plate that had been stolen in mid-October. Mary's car was legal in Georgia and had been fitted with the proper tags. Investigators believed that the stolen plate was a clue as to why her vehicle had not been located by Lenox Square security before her bank supervisor drove to the lot and discovered her car himself.
Authorities believed that whoever drove Mary's car to the lot may have kept it hidden on the night of her disappearance, only to return it to its initial parking spot later. This theory has never been proven. If the car was in fact moved, it would have been at about the same time that Mary was seen in North Carolina.
A $20,000 ransom demand was made for Mary after news about the credit card slips came out. An anonymous caller told Roy to go an overpass in the Pisgah National Forest (northeast of Asheville, NC) and find further instructions posted on a sign. An FBI agent went to the location in Roy's place and found a blank piece of paper struck to the sign. The caller did not contact the Little family again and has never been identified. The ransom demand is suspected to be a hoax.
Police investigated Roy for possible involvement in his wife's disappearance. Her former roommates did not like him and some refused to attend their wedding because of it. Roy reportedly did not seem to care much about Mary's disappearance. Several times he refused to take a lie detector test. However, he had a solid alibi for the time of her disappearance, and nothing to gain from her death, and there were no signs of trouble in the marriage. Roy has never been charged with any wrongdoing in connection with Mary's case.
There was some speculation that Mary's disappearance might have been connected to a sex scandal at her place of employment around the time she vanished. The bank had hired a former FBI agent to investigate claims of lesbian sexual harassment and possible prostitution on the property. Mary apparently knew about the scandal but it is not now believed to have anything to do with her disappearance.
Friends told investigators that Mary had been receiving unsettling phone calls at work during the weeks leading up to her disappearance. She apparently gave some indications to the caller that she was married and could no longer visit with the unknown person, but he or she was welcome to visit her. The caller's identity remains a mystery.
Mary also received flowers from a "secret admirer" in the weeks leading up to her disappearance. The bouquets were traced to a florist near Mary's residence, but the purchaser's identity remains unknown. Mary never shared the details of the strange phone calls or discussed the flowers with anyone.
According to some of her friends, she was fearful of being home alone or driving her car unaccompanied in the weeks prior to October 14. She did not explain why she felt unsafe. A few days before she disappeared, Mary insinuated to her co-workers that she had something important to tell them. She never revealed what it was.
In May 1967, eighteen months after Mary vanished, another young woman who worked in the same office was murdered. Diane Shields was last seen leaving work in her blue and white Chevrolet Impala. At 2:30 a.m. the next day, the car was found near a laundry on Sylvan Road in Atlanta with Shields's body inside the trunk. She was fully clothed and had not been sexually assaulted, and she was still wearing her diamond engagement ring. She had died of suffocation; a scarf had been shoved down her throat.
Police speculated that Mary's and Shields's cases might be connected, due the similarities in their disappearances and the fact that the women worked together, but eventually that theory was discarded. Shields's homicide, like Mary's disappearance, remains unsolved.
The police file concerning Mary's case vanished sometime in the years following her 1965 disappearance. Her father died in 1979, but her mother is still alive and has never stopped looking for her. Some police officers who investigated Mary's case do not believe foul play was involved; they think Mary staged her disappearance for unknown reasons.
Other investigators believe Mary was abducted. A woman reported being accosted by a man in the Lenox Square Shopping Center parking lot shortly before Mary would have been walking to her car; some authorities believe the man had something to do with Mary's disappearance. He has never been unidentified.
Mary's case remains active and unsolved. There are a few threads in the sub re: this case and are searchable as such.

In the red corner: Tennessee Titans

We went over to /tennesseetitans to get a bit of information on the state of the team.
How has Mariota been?
  • “Mariota has been great. His only real problems last year were with ball security and deep throws both of which were also a function of bad o line play and receivers not being able to run proper routes.” - PitTitan
Which rookies have stood out?
  • The general consensus of the sub is that the 2016 5th round Tajae Sharpe is looking promising. With injuries and lack of performances in the rest of the receiving corps, fans feel the starting receiver spot is his to lose.
  • “Tajae Sharpe. He went from 5th round rookie to basically #1 receiver on the depth chart as of now (since Kendall Wright is injured)” - WertyBurger
What are you most looking forward to this season?
  • “Of course excited about the rookies on offense, Tajae and Derrick in particular.” - PartysaurusRexx
  • Again, the fans are excited to see how the rookies, especially Tajae Sharpe, perform. Most agree that this is the best looking offense the Titans have put on the field lately.
Optimism or pessimism on the coaching?
  • With this being the first full season as a Titans coach for Mike Mularky, I wanted to know what the fans expected. * While most are not on the Mularky wagon, Titans fans are optimistic about the coordinaters.
What are your expectations for this season?
  • “7-9. Anything less than that is a failure (barring catastrophic injuries) and anything more than that is a success. Realistically I think we are a 7-9 team. If we get there I'll be happy.” - PitTitan
How do you feel about the DGB trade?
  • The fans are split on this one. Some love it. They feel he hasn’t been up to par lately, and most are hopeful that Tajae will be the better option. Others aren’t so happy about it. They believe there was still potential in Dorial.

HISTORY VS TENNESSEE

  • The Panthers have only played the Titans 5 times since entering the league in 1995. The first time these two teams met was in the Panthers' second season in 1996, a game that ended with a 31-6 victory over the Titans, the largest Panthers victory in the series. The next 3 meetings between the teams went in the Titans' favor, and quite emphatically so. The closest of the 3 games was a 20-7 loss for the Panthers in 2007, the other two being beatdowns to the tune of 37-17 in 2003 and 30-3 in 2011. The Panthers finally answered back last season in a controversial victory that ruffled a few feathers and elevated Carolina's record to 9-0.
  • In the Cam Newton era, the Panthers have split their 2 games with the Titans. The first game was a sound beating that saw the Panthers put up just 3 points. Cam Newton completed 23 passes on 40 attempts for 212 yards, 0 TDs and 1 INT. He was also sacked 5 times for 46 yards. The Titans' defense was just as effective against Carolina's running game, holding Newton to 55 yards on 7 rushes, DeAngelo Williams to 35 yards on 8 attempts and Jonathan Stewart to 23 yards on 4 attempts. The Panthers' defense would only register one sack that day by DT Andre Neblett and had the best play of the day for the Panthers with a Chris Gamble Interception.
  • The next time the two teams met was under far better circumstances for the Panthers. Several years of Dave Gettleman drafts led the Panthers to have a much more complete roster than they had in their first meeting. With the help of a competent defense, Cam Newton was able to lead the Panthers' offense with 21 completions on 25 attempts for 1 TD. Jonathan Stewart ran for 93 yards and 1 TD on 22 attempts and Greg Olsen hauled in 8 catches for 80 yards. Interestingly, the Panthers again gave up 5 sacks in this game thanks to Dick Lebeau's exotic blitzes that exposed some of the weaknesses of our offensive line.

Players to Watch: Panthers

Players to watch
In episode 2 of Camp Confidential, Gettleman tells his coaches and scouts that they need to plug backups into the first string in order to test a players development. These are some players that are likely to be seen with the second strings but could get some work earlier.
Cameron Artis-Payne / Brandon Wegher
Game 1 was a let down for both CAP and Wegher with average yards per carry of 2.0 and 1.3 respectively. While most of the struggle can be attributed to the poor backup offensive line performance, these two don't have time for excuses.
The backup running back battle features two players that need quality opportunities, and although it's unlikely, it would be great to cut to the chase and give Tolbert and Fozzy an easy night. Either way, expect a better game for both players with CAP being the first RB to rotate in by the third series and Wegher should get some touches late in the 2nd quarter.
While both are capable of springing the big play, the job they're fighting to be Stewart's immediate backup so let's see if they can focus on consistently following their blocks for 4-5 yards rather than looking to break outside. CAP has the edge right now, but this battle should come down to final cuts.
Ryan Delaire
It's hard to say a player needs to redeem himself after one preseason game but Delaire was downright terrible. We were supposed to see a more consistent player after an off-season with the defensive coaches and also time to heal a torn labrum he played with most of last year. Instead we saw him get pushed over and run himself out of plays, finishing with 1 tackle on 35 snaps and allowed two big runs. ESPN credits him with a sack but it's tough to tell who got there first.
The larger issue with Delaire's play is he allows QBs to escape after he runs by them which not only eliminates himself but it neutralizes the great DTs pushing up the middle. The reason coaches stuck with Jared Allen and his two sacks is because he plays with gap discipline in both phases. Collapsing the pocket is a choreographed team effort along the defensive line. Delaire needs to show he understands that on Saturday.
Daryl Williams
Daryl's first series wasn't exactly how he imagined it allowing a strip sack on the first series when he lined up at LT. While it put a damper on the hype train for him to start over Remmers it's important to remember that Williams has played RT his entire career and he did seem to rebound once he slid back to the right side. The Titans play a 3-4 zone blitz scheme under legendary (and fossil) defensive coordinator Dick Lebeau so this may be a good opportunity to see the offensive line versus more blitzes than a usual preseason game. If the backup runningbacks have a solid game, it's likely that Daryl Williams was a key factor in opening holes for them.
Kevin Norwood
Bersin crushed the first preseason game with 5 receptions for 63 yards and showed reliability we dream of having from a 5th WR. But he also took a nasty hit to the ribs and hasn't practiced since. This is Kevin Norwood's best opportunity to show what he can do since he arrived in Carolina nearly one year ago. When you watch Norwood, he looks the part of an NFL WR. He's big, runs smooth routes, has good hands but preseason and training camp are about showing potential he just hasn't come close to making fans ask,"who is that?"
He might get some time with the starting lineup but it's probably safer to assume he'll get quality time with Derek Anderson. With the next game being the "dress rehearsal," now is the time for Norwood to impose himself on a 2nd string secondary like Bersin did last week.
Damiere Byrd
Byrd only caught one pass for 35 yards but what a catch it was. He also took a kickoff back to midfield and looked pretty good as a punt returner until he fumbled the last punt of the game. Byrd has come a long way from last year and is putting coaches in a similar position as Wegher put them in last year.
Derek Anderson clearly likes Byrd as a WR so don't be surprised if he is the most targeted WR when those two are on the field. If Byrd does make the squad it will be because the Panthers decide they can't risk him on waivers and keep six receivers. Should he make the 53, he would probably be inactive for most games like Wegher in 2015 but with Ted Ginn's contract up after this year having a versatile deep threat waiting in the wings could be worth the roster spot.
Tight Ends
With Olsen having back spasms and Dickson dealing with a groin pull we should get a great look at the back up TEs. Last week, Marcus Lucas was the only other TE to catch a pass. Scott Simonson has been praised by Rivera for playing his way into a roster spot so we'll probably see him getting reps with the first team offense. Beau Sandland and Braxton Deaver came into camp with expectations that one could supplant Dickson but it's highly doubtful that will happen.
