When sources of harm are recognised, the university is able to put controls in place to manage the risks and prevent harm to staff. A health hazard, within the context of occupational health and safety, refers to any chemical or substance for which there is adequate research or statistical evidence to suggest that it can trigger health effects in those who are exposed. This quick reference guide summarises the key components of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA), including the roles and responsibilities of businesses, officers, workers and others in managing workplace health and safety risks. A hazard is any object, situation, or behavior that has the potential to cause injury, ill health, or damage to property or the environment. Health and safety hazards exist in every workplace. Some are easily identified and corrected, while others are necessary risks of the job and must be managed in other ways (for instance, by using protective equipment). When we refer to hazards in relation to occupational safety and health the most commonly used definition is ‘ A Hazard is a potential source of harm or adverse health effect on a person or persons’. The terms Hazard and Risk are often used interchangeably but this simple example explains the difference between the two. According OSHA, a health hazard refers to a chemical that is classified according to its potential to cause one of the following hazardous effects: acute toxicity (any route of exposure), skin corrosion or irritation, serious eye damage or eye irritation, respiratory or skin sensitization, germ cell mutagenicity, carcinogenicity, reproductive toxicity, specific target organ toxicity (single or repeated exposure), or aspiration hazard. This NFPA hazard rating system includes three color codes and five intensity levels. Each color code (blue, red, and yellow) of the hazard rating system corresponds to a hazard: health, fire, and instability (denotation or chemical change). Within each colored section, a numerical rating is given to the hazard. The ratings range from 0 to 4. A rating of 4 is the highest. Often it is felt that the two terms mean the same thing. With the new WHS laws it is important for your business to differentiate between these terms and what they actually mean. In its strict sense, a hazard is simply something which could potentially be harmful to a person's life or well-being. However, hazards are sometimes classified by the combination of the likelihood of the hazard turning into a (health) effect and by the seriousness of that effect (see also the discussion of risk above).
