Hello my fellow poor people! Welcome to this week's “Malikas Kards Konfidential," inside production details/family notes from KUWTK’s last episode, “Sister, Sister and a Babymoon”
Needing 2 weeks of multiple health screens after watching this Malika-filled episode, producers surprised us with a trip to Morongo where we could pretend that we really care about the Malikas just for a brief moment in time. They gambled, put their own health at risk, discussed the horrors of giving birth to a person that’s about to pop, and honestly, nothing more. I realize that for most people, this episode is something so far out of reach from the normal Kardashian realm, so in moments like these, I am humbly reminded why this show is coming to an end. #ThisIsTorture
Our A-plot is Khloe taking Malika on a babymoon, something that is apparently a very real thing, and our B-plot was Corey v. Kendall. Let’s dive in before we're all haunted by Robert Kardashian's hologram!
Cold Open/Scene 1: Kourtney and Kim discuss Kendall/Kylie fight

• Producers say Kourtney and Kendall spend the most time poolside at Kris' Palm Springs House.
• When the family films in the pool, producers usually watch from Kris' outdoor grill and bar area.
• Producers were still reeling from Kendall and Kylie's fight. They assumed the drag show ended their Palm Springs filming, but then things got turned upside down.

Scene 2: Kim and Khloe talk about the fight while Kourtney sits in the corner and says nothing

• Producers spent a bit of time with Kim and Kendall after the fight to better understand what went down.
• The girls are in one of Kris' guest rooms... The 14,500 square foot home has 7 bedrooms in total.
• Kim and Kourtney's fight was still very fresh for producers even though it happened a few months ago. Producers say intense sister fights of that magnitude don't happen very often.
• Because none of the sisters were actually present for Kendall and Kylie's fight, they were hesitant to take sides. They hoped Kylie and Kendall could work things out themselves.

Scene 3: Kim, Khloe and Scott talk about the fight + Malika's babymoon

• Producers make sure every family member involved in an argument has their side captured on camera. "It's important we don't come off like the show is presenting only one person's perspective and emotions."
• Although her sisters reached out, it was Kris that Kylie was in touch with the most after the fight.
• Before giving birth to True, Khloe took a sister "baby moon" with Kim and Kourtney to Tokyo.
• After Kim and Kanye announced in 2013 that they were expecting for the first time, they escaped to Paris for a "little baby moon"
• Malika has said she craved cereal throughout her whole pregnancy.
• Malika has said she'd love to have twins one day, just not in her first pregnancy.
• There were a lot of mixed feelings when Scott started coughing. Most producers didn't know what to think or take seriously yet.
• The crew also tried holding their breath and counting to ten.
• Producers thought Kourtney was the family member who might get bored during lockdown. She loves to travel, so it would be hard for her to suddenly be grounded.
• Producers thought Kim would love the downtime... she's so busy, it would be nice for her to get a breather from all of her obligations.

This scene was filmed on March 30th, 2020, three weeks after Kendall/Kylie's fight and Malika's babymoon. I can tell because Kim is wearing the same shirt/hairstyle that she wore while taping virtual interviews for The Tonight Show and The View, the latter of which which aired the next day. Poor Malika... she's just trying to spend some time with her newborn baby, but this is the price you pay for taking over Kourtney's spot on the show! This must also mean that they were NOT quarantining separately here... as this was just two weeks after the L.A. shutdown. A professional camera crew clearly shot this as well, so let's hope they all got tested before filming!

Scenes 4/5: Malika sits through labor horror stories during her baby moon lunch + en route to Malika's favorite spot in the world, Morongo

• Malika's babymoon was the same week (erhm, the day after) that Khloe had been in Palm Springs with her family.
• The girls wanted a cute outdoorsy restaurant that was close to Morongo.
• In August 2020, Khadijah announced she was pregnant with her third baby. She gave birth to her son Christian in 2010 and daughter Celine in 2014.
• It made Malika nervous to hear all the birth stories over lunch.
• The girls got recognized at lunch, but producers say people were respectful.
• Palm Springs is frequented by L.A. residents. Producers say everyone kind of gets it and isn't so out of control the second they see a celebrity and cameras around them.
• A long bathroom break at the restaurant held up the girls. Producers say it started with Malika, then everyone was in there with her, so it took her forever to get on the road.
• It was only a 20-minute drive from lunch to Morongo.
• Producers say Malika got pretty carsick whenever she wasn't driving.
• Production provides a basket of snacks when filming on long drives.
• All the sisters have given pregnant members of production great advice about labor and delivery.

Scene 6: Kylie breaks away from STASSSIE BABBBYYY to fulfill her contractual obligations by participating in a scene w/Kris at her office

• Both Kris and Kylie have the same exact desk size in their offices.
• Because Kris is seen by many as a "boss bitch mega-mogul," it's easy to forget she's parented 6 kids. Producers are always in awe when that side of her comes out.
• Kylie and Kendall have bickered about "typical sister stuff" over the years, like borrowing each other's clothes without saying anything.
• Some of producers' favorite memories of filming Kylie and Kendall as little girls were during family trips... most notably the Dominican Republic, Greece and Bora Bora.
• Producers say those trips were a lot of fun, and the girls would film music videos with the whole family.

• Cheryl was Rob's partner on Dancing With The Stars.
• The man standing against the wall is Kris' security guard.
• Corey and Kris were learning the Argentine tango because they wanted to enter a small dance competition.
• Producers say Kourtney would also be a great dance partner for Corey. (okay? 😅Maybe not after he whoops Penelope's ass!)
• While Corey was on the phone with Kendall, Cheryl and Artem gave Kris a few pointers.
• Kris knew Corey was on with Kendall, but she had no idea things got so heated until after the call.

• The family usually asks each other for their opinions before posting things on social media.
• Producers have joked that the girls should read their DMs on camera - but it's never happened.
• Many photos on the family's social media feeds are taken by the crew members. Audio supervisor Erin - aka Paxy - is their favorite "camera phone" photographer.
• Sometimes producers will set the lighting and the DP suggests the framing... helping with the family's social media pics becomes a fun little production.
• Throughout the babymoon, Khloe never took Malika's phone away... or made her take social media breaks.
• Malika said she didn't morning sickness at all during pregnancy.
• Malika has said, "I'm able to be a Malika because I have a Khloe.... we're a duo that's really tough to come by."
• Producers say the girls got recognized in the casino, and there was a point where a small crowd was gathered behind their table filming them.

• Malika thought she was having contractions for about half an hour before dinner, but producers say nothing super alarming.
• Producers were really worried Malika would actually go into labor.
• Despite hearing about Morongo for years from Malika, Khloe had no idea what to expect.
• Producers say this was one of the longest dinners ever filmed. It lasted for hours - the girls hung out and were chatting forever.
• After dinner, Malika wanted everyone to play games back in the room, but Khloe and a producer were trying to figure out how to get out of it. It was really late and Malika needed to rest, even though Malika didn't feel like it.

Scene 12: This episode still drags on as Malika gives her baby a real kick by drinking caffeine

• Malika had been in pain on and off since waking up.
• There was talk about Malika pranking the girls by pretending her pain was getting worse, but that wasn't until later in the day when it was clear she was feeling fine.
• One of the most heartwarming moments for producers was when Malika shared a sonogram of the baby with them. It was the first time any of them saw her future son.
• Khloe and Malika did steal some private moments together early in the morning and at the end of filming.
• Khloe was first to leave because she had work obligations back home. The other girls took their time and hit up some shops on the way out.

Scene 13: Corey and Kris talk about the phone call w/Kendall

• When Kris moved into this house, production limited the amount of crew allowed inside to just a couple. That's significantly fewer than any of the girls' homes.
• Kris had spoken off-camera to producers about being in the middle of Corey and Kendall. They really felt for Kris as she struggled with her dilemma.
• Kendall didn't want to see Corey or film with him. Producers say she was still super upset.

Scene 14: Khloe, masked up, is graced by a visit from Kris... who is shook by the new mask culture

• Khloe's assistant picked up the masks at a hardware store.
• When filming that day, production also wore masks per Khloe's request. Producers say masks weren't yet mandated.
• Some crew members were worried about Khloe's runny nose, while others were unsure what to think. The severity of it all was still not as clear as it is now.
• At this point, producers and the family were all freaking out and unsure what was going on. It was the next week when they stopped filming and went into lockdown.

Scene 15: Kendall shoots her Architectural Digest cover

• There were 15-20 people from the Architectural Digest team at the shoot, and just two people from the series production team.
• According to producers, the most impressive part of Kendall's house is her art room. It has curtains that are actually a canvas you can paint on.
• Sometimes the family copies each other's interior design ideas, but producers say they have individual vibes and like keeping certain things unique to their individual homes.
• Producers were surprised that Kendall and Kylie still weren't speaking. Khloe and Kendall discussed the drama with Kylie for about 30 minutes, then Khloe "really started coming apart," say producers.

I had a party at my house last night. I have an antique slot machine from the 1940s that is in absolutely spotless and working condition in my living room. My step grandma was a show girl she she got it while dating a count room guy prior to meeting my grandpa.
Over the years people have played it and maybe won a few quarters here and there. Maybe a max of $50 at a time. As far as I know the jackpot was never hit on it so however it works there was probably about $700 in the jackpot reserve that had built up over the years. I’d never bothered to have it cleaned out since it just seemed like a fun novelty.
Well a friend’s friend hit the jackpot last night. I was fucking floored when he legit thought he could keep my ~$700. His case was hed been playing with his own money and I would have kept his quarters. My argument was I’d be happy to give him his quarters back if he’d asked but I’m not a casino and while I’m not destitute, I can’t afford to give someone $700. Argument caused the party to wind down and one of my best guy friends basically told the guy he’d be in real shit if he tried to leave with the money but the guy left threatening to come back with the cops and sue me in small claims court. I have no idea if that was realistic but no cops came back.
So was I the asshole for nor letting him keep the money?

Say you have a change jar, has $100 in it. Your good friend asks to borrow $25, for parking, you'd say yes right? Another friend says wow, that’s cool I have $1.25 in my pocket, can I donate to your change jar? You’d say yes. Now let’s say a guy you’ve never met says “hey I just put .80 into your change jar, now I’m taking the whole thing.” You would say no. I would have let him keep $50-100 (he certainly got away with some in his pockets) but he was such an asshole right away that he didn't give me the chance to come to any sort of deal. Most everyone at the party just wanted him gone. I do feel bad and maybe my guilt over the apparent double standard is why I'm asking here. But I do feel as though had he been even slightly cool and not threaten cops or lawsuits I wouldn't have been backed into a corner.

So this is all guess work based on what my grandma said the jackpot could hold (there's a window that shows the coins in rhe jackpot, the space behind is about the size of a big shoe box). She said it gets full at $800. It was more than half when she and my grandpa gave it to me, I always guessed $500. In five years it's now 7/8ths full. I play it from to time to time so I'd say $100 of that is mine and $100 is friends. I think the jackpot and normal pay outs come from different boxes so last night was the last night I've ever seen that window empty. I know nothing of the machine or how it works or how to change settings so I may be so wrong and a slot machine "nerd" could correct me if I'm way off base.

And now I've found out that some of the quarters that my grandma had from the 50s or 60s might actually be silver. So good thing I hung onto them right ? 3. I never cleaned it out because honestly I like the way it looked with the coins in the window. This thing is enourmous and built with casino security in mind so it was in fact, a great piggy bank.
   
4. Some nice NTAs have suggested I have a bowl of quarters a for people to play. I actually in effect did that because 80% the time people who wanted to play didn't have change (I got it five years ago) so I always had quarters around, maybe just not right by the machine.
   
5. As an example, Over the years it's mostly friends kids who want to play. I had a very precocious 9 year old once come over with his $20 of money truly expecting to get the jackpot. Edit 11: sooooo the plot thickens, thank you to some very helpful people who own slot machines who DM'ed who were also able to suggest experts in my area, I was able to call a local person who works on antique slot machines. My slot machine is highly customized but it's based around a pretty well known model from that era (don't want to say exactly because only a few of them exist anymore) and he said I could tell right away if the machine was broken or had been tampered with. In my very, very, very amateur job of checking it over it does appear that this little piece is either broken or misplaced. So it looks like this piece of shit "guest" actually broke my machine to steal my money. There wasn't a jackpot at all. I don't have confirmation of this until the repair guy is able to come later this week but it looks like that's what happened. The guy said there's an outside chance that if that piece was broken or tampered with that it was an accident but he wouldn't bet on it. I still don't care if I'm YTA till the cows come home, posting here has probably allowed me to get to the bottom of this. And fuck that guy.

• I actually really appreciate starting this episode not with a flashback, but with a fight scene, so that we can be introduced to best cat girl, Felicia. Speaking of introductions…
  
• Felicia’s introduction, just like the ones of every other major character, is just great. Her just repeatedly saying “crush them” goes to show her obsessive hatred towards witches, and her rushing into battle despite her magical girl comrades telling her to wait goes to show how her hatred towards witches makes her impulsive and hotheaded. However, the fact that while all of her comrades struggle to take down the familiars, she just effortlessly mows them down, sending them flying implies that while she just rushes in without a plan, she’s at least got more than enough strength to cover for her rash nature. That, or she’s got some SERIOUS berserker rage. Nonetheless, I know that I would sure as hell want her on my party if I was an isekai protagonist. Her comrades staring at her in awe as she leaps in the air, familiars flying away from her, as she yells “I’ll massacre you!” sort of goes to show a point that I think was handled rather poorly in the game. Now, this is all based on my poor memory of Felicia’s introduction in the game, so bear with me. It is rather heavily hinted at that when Felicia enters her quote unquote berserker rage, she not only becomes a hotheaded witch slaying machine, she also becomes someone that even somewhat terrifies her magical girl allies. This introduction comes to a spectacular, albeit abrupt ending when the opening pops in. Overall, great introduction. Rather short, but still, a great one. 9/10.
  
• So, just my 2 cents, but I like how the moment the opening ends, Iroha’s alarm clock goes off, as if to symbolize that Iroha thinks that Felicia’s introduction scene was just a dream. Or that the scenes in the opening were just a dream. It goes to imply that Iroha saw SOME dream, that I can tell. My logic is fucking impeccable, I know.
  
• Iroha wakes almost instantaneously. OK, I call BULL! I’m a 15-year-old that has an alarm clock, mine being something rather cheerful and energetic, and even I don’t get up and out of bed in less than 5 minutes. Then again, it MIGHT have something to do with the fact that this is a fantasy show… Nah, doubt it. Fantasy show makes no sense! Quick! Add one to the sin counter! Oh, great, ShaymemeSins is back…

I will, however, take points off for Kyouko not appearing and drinking the water with them. She IS supposed to do that, after all. Then again, it’s an adaptation, so I guess they DO get a bit of leeway.

I know Iroha would never do that because a. She’s WAY too polite, b. She doesn’t want to leave a bad impression on the Kamihama magical girls, and c. she doesn’t know Judo, but still. It’s fun to imagine, I guess.

• Wait wait wait wait WAIT! Felicia is a 13-year-old, and Iroha is a 15-year-old. By Japanese standards, even Yachiyo is a minor, and Yachiyo is 19, the oldest magical girl to date! (not including the spin off manga). What are these two underage girls doing in a casino? Actually, from the quick research I did, it seems slot machines (which is what Iroha and Felicia seem to be playing) are illegal in Japan, period, and are only operated by Yakuza members. I know Felicia is a mercenary, but she’s a MAGICAL GIRL mercenary, and 13 years old to boot! You CANNOT expect me to believe that she has connections to the Yakuza. • Overall opinion: Truly, a great episode, and a really fun one. It thrusts us into the action of the next “arc” without much wait, and a lot of the important things are paced properly. I’ll be honest, when I originally saw that Kyouko wasn’t with Felicia and Iroha to drink the water, I was a bit worried about how they were gonna integrate her into this “arc’s” final conflict, but when I saw her eavesdropping to Felicia, Iroha, Tsuruno and Yachiyo’s conversation, intrigued about this talk of an “Uwasa” and “lucky water”, it calmed me down. It finally reassured me that even though they might change things, they’re still gonna make sure everything makes sense. I really liked this episode, and I also really liked how they didn’t feel the need to delve into Felicia’s psyche or something like that. Don’t know about later, but she’s not exactly a complex character this early in the story. She’s the gang’s “Imouto” (or little sister, if you prefer), who’s angry at witches for doing such and such truly horrible things to her parents, and has a SERIOUES case of “berserker rage”, for better or worse. She doesn’t believe in teaming up, and she’ll work for whoever pays the highest. Her “character arc” for now is to learn that she should help her friends, no matter what, not the highest bidder. For now, she’s not exactly complex, and that’s OK. Not every character needs to be “complex” and “compelling”. The final score is a solid 9/10.

I don’t have a gambling problem. That’s the first thing I want known. It’s also what they all say, right? No, I’m not addicted to gambling, but I have a co-dependency issue with someone who is.
I’m not the coolest guy on the block, and I’m not particularly good at anything. Ted is, though, and we’ve been best friends since we were four. He’s the one who always pushes forward blindly into adventures, and I guess I’m the one who always gets him back out when things go sideways. There’s always been an element of luck to our continued physical and financial survival, but never more than now.
We’d flown out to Napa Valley for a friend’s wedding—and already ditched the reception party at around eleven. I could hardly afford to do anything; I’d only been able to come because Ted had bought me a ticket. Because I was only there on his generosity, I followed him to the quiet and rather empty bars that sparsely dotted the area. It was beautiful country, filled with vineyards and history, but it was not a party town. This frustrated Ted, of course, who began plying locals with drinks in order to interrogate them about local hotspots. “Somebody has to be having fun in this town,” he would say with a grin.
One bitter old man finally spoke up at the third empty bar we invaded. “There’s a casino, if you really need it that bad.”
We looked at our phones, but Google Maps showed nothing.
“It won’t be on any map,” the old man said, scowling at us. “Just go south from here and you’ll find it.”
Behind our informant, I saw an unhappy look on the bartender’s face. That should have tipped me off—but Ted was already thanking the old man and heading for the door. I followed quickly, ignoring the uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach.
Driving through the rolling hills at night was a claustrophobic and confusing experience. Our phone signal dropped, and we found ourselves driving purely by instinct. West? South? East? It was impossible to know for sure. We stuck to the sole road until it turned to dirt underneath the wheels. That’s when I almost called the whole thing.
But Ted pulled up outside a graveyard and pointed. “Look! Cars!”
And he was right: two dozen cars were parked on the grass next to an unassuming old church that had all its windows boarded up. He’d only caught the sight across the graveyard and through the trees because he’d been looking so intently. Triumphant, he said, “That’s a hidden party if I’ve ever seen one!” and carefully drove the car between the headstones to reach the improvised parking area.
I climbed out with trepidation. Even up close, the century-old church looked dilapidated, dark, and abandoned. “Come on, this is too much.”
Ted wasn’t having it. He ran right up and pushed open the front door—and bright light and the sounds of electronic games burst forth. In a moment, he was gone, and I was left to step across the high grass alone. The fact that there was actually a hidden casino here lifted my spirits a little; maybe it was all just a gimmick to encourage people to drink and gamble more.
Funny—it still sounded quiet and looked dark until the moment I cracked the door open.
The light and noise swallowed me, and I blinked repeatedly until my eyes and ears adjusted. One pepper-haired Asian suit went on a lucky streak, getting the crowd all riled up—himself included. While onlookers shrieked with excitement, he bet it all.
He lost.
“Heh, seems legit,” Ted told me. “I’m gonna head over to the blackjack tables for a minute.” And he moved off to begin playing.
“That was everything I had,” the Asian businessman said, dismayed. The two girls that had been clinging to his arms disengaged and began to look disinterested. Hurriedly, he made a motion to a casino manager, and the well-dressed but subtly subservient facilitator brought him a small suitcase. It clicked open with a rush of air, and I watched as the unlucky gambler pulled out bundled stacks of blue dollar bills.
That was odd. They were American dollars—same faces, designs, and everything—just dark blue instead of green. Was this fake money? Some sort of in-house system? Come to think of it, I saw no chips, just money. If these were the replacement for chips, why all the care to make them so similar to real dollars?
The gambler in question did not have the same qualms. He gladly placed the stacks on the table. The crowd grew energized again, and the girls began showing him attention once more.
Feeling a little strange, I moved off, seeking Ted. I found him at the blackjack table as he won a hand.
Grinning, he pumped a fist. “I like this place. Come on, play.”
“I don’t have any money for this,” I told him, sheepish.
“Here’s some.” He handed me a hundred dollar bill. I took it and sat, but secretly stashed the hundred and pulled the last of my own cash reserves from my wallet. As I always did, I would return his money back to him when he wasn’t looking. He never made me feel bad about it, and he had a high-paying job besides, but I just couldn’t stomach leeching off of someone else like that.
We played a few hands while still enjoying free drinks; I drank slower to remain soberish, but Ted guzzled away, having the time of his life. He lost quite a few hands, but played well, and actually started accumulating more money than he’d come in with. I, in contrast, lost all of my meager cash rather quickly.
Upon the loss of my last dollar, a suited man with slicked-back hair and a politician’s grin approached and leaned down between us, an arm on the back edge of each of our chairs. He spoke with a thick Middle Eastern accent, although his skin was pale enough that it was uncertain what region he was from. “Gentlemen, welcome. I don’t think I’ve seen you grace our establishment before. I am Malcom.”
“Nice to meet you,” Ted said. “This place is great. Love the free drinks.”
“Yes,” Malcolm said with a widening grin. “A small expense in the face of a casino’s profits. I am not a greedy man.”
“So you’re the owner?” I asked, not wanting to be left out.
“Yes, but think of me as your friend.” He finally moved back and stood upright. His gaze shifted to me. “I see you are out of money. Would you like to keep playing?” He motioned a manager over, and a briefcase was opened before me, complete with the stacks of blue dollar bills I’d seen before.
I glanced over awkwardly.
Ted was suspicious, but open to the idea. “What are these?”
“They represent debt,” Malcolm said graciously.
“Interesting.” Ted looked to me. “You should do it, Ryan.”
But that was not my name. “I think I’m alright, Jason,” I replied. What did he have in mind? I imagined he was planning to use these blue dollars, if needed, and then slip out. They couldn’t make us pay back a debt if they had no idea who we were.
Accepting my refusal, Malcolm ordered the suitcase closed and withdrew. “Good luck, gentlemen.”
I was left with a chill and a shiver.
From then on, I could only sit and watch as Ted gambled, talked up girls, and had a good time. The free drinks were no longer offered to me, and, indeed, none of the patrons or employees would so much as look at me. I should have noticed, but, again, my life was often lonely. I simply accepted it.
We moved from game to game, eventually ending up back at roulette, and Ted soon found himself in a situation we had witnessed earlier: energized crowd, streak of lucky wins, and a potential for a huge payoff. Despite my whispered warnings, he bet everything he had. The ball bounced, the numbers were called, and I sighed.
He’d lost.
Malcolm returned with a grin I imagined to be rather hungry, and the suitcase was offered to Ted.
Someone in the crowd squeezed my forearm in warning, but by the time I looked, it was impossible to tell who had done it. “Don’t. Let’s go home.”
“Come on, Ryan!” he shouted back. I could tell he still intended to rip off the establishment. “Let’s have some fun!” Reaching down, he eagerly pulled out two armfuls of blue dollar stacks, most of which he pawned off on me. I held them as he bet blue money on another roll. It might have been my imagination, but the stacks felt subtly warm.
He won—thankfully—but that quickly led to more bets, and I watched with a sinking feeling as my load of blue dollars shrank. The eyes of the crowd were upon us very intently now, and Malcolm seemed to be staring solely at Ted—grinning only when Ted looked his way.
“We should go,” I said again, but Ted ignored me.
There were a hundred opportunities to leave, but Ted took none of them. At long last, his final blue dollar went to the house. At that point, he whispered his intent to me, and I took off running after him a heartbeat later. I made it to the door and burst into the cool night air, but Ted remained just within.
“What are you doing?” I shouted to him. “Get out here!”
He seemed horrified. He stared down at his feet as they toed the red-and-gold carpet’s edge. “I can’t! I can’t leave!”
Malcolm approached calmly behind Ted, flanked by two suited managers.
Sensing something was wrong, I leapt forward and kept the church door from closing—but I made sure to remain just outside. “Malcolm, what the hell is this?”
The grinning man gave a small laugh. “I told you that my money was a form of debt. People like your friend here never listen. They think that they can cheat the house. Perhaps that would be possible if the house, in this case, were not a demon. But it is—I am—and he is now indebted.”
I stared up at him, trembling, but it seemed that I was not in direct danger. The next question was obvious. “What does he owe?”
“The same thing that is always owed,” Malcolm told me, his grin widening along his cheeks in a starkly inhuman manner. “Each blue dollar represented a portion of his soul. If even one remained, there was a chance he might win it all back, and more, thus I would not technically own him. With not even one blue dollar left, he has no chance of escape. He is mine.”
Looking past him, I saw the patrons and the employees watching us. I understood: they were all his. The Asian businessman I had seen gambling had been one of us, free, but no longer. I looked back to Malcolm, thinking about his explanation of chance. “So you operate by rules then?”
“Of course. I am a demon, rule-bound by nature. This type of thing must be enacted fairly.”
Ted still struggled with the invisible threshold, his eyes on me, his expression desperate.
“How do I get him out?” I asked, my pulse racing. If the roles had been reversed, I was sure Ted would have had a plan, but I had no idea what to do.
Malcolm laughed softly for a full five seconds before answering. “There is nothing you can do except leave. To buy back even a single blue bill, he must have money. He has no money, therefore he cannot buy back the single blue bill required. Believe me when I tell you that this is not my establishment’s—how do you Americans say?—first rodeo.”
Ted began screaming, but a gesture from Malcolm silenced him. Ted continued moving and opening his mouth, certainly, but no noise came out.
Heart thudding in my chest hard enough that I feared I might pass out, I reached in my back pocket and slipped out the hundred dollar bill. “How many of his blue dollars will this get me?”
“It must be his money, not yours,” Malcolm replied, his expression uncertain for the first time since I’d seen him.
“It is his!” I shouted. “He gave it to me to hold!”
A manager whispered in Malcolm’s ear, and a frustrated sigh followed. “At current exchange rates, that hundred will purchase twenty-one of his blue bills.”
The other manager opened the suitcase, showing twenty-one loose bills, and I scooped them up before dropping the hundred in their place. Without warning, Ted’s screams became audible again, and he fell forward into the graveyard with me. Grabbing him by instinct, I kept him from falling completely down, and Malcolm stood staring at us with anger. Now that his careful veneer was fading, I could see ghastly undertones in his skin, and the pale outlines of numerous gnarled horns on his head—and on the heads of the managers beside him.
Ted accepted the twenty-one blue dollars from me and stood, slowly recovering his wits and breath. “Jesus, they had me.” He gripped my shoulder. “You got me out! You got me out! You always do. Thank you, thank you.”
I nodded and began backing away from that unhallowed place. “There was no way we could have known.”
“Care to make another wager?” the demon at the church door asked. “Now that you know what we are, there are greater winnings available. How would you care for immortality? Perhaps the power of flight? Or precognition? We can gift you these things, assuming you win enough.”
Ted stopped following me and turned to look back at Malcolm’s charred face.
A terrible sinking feeling overcame me. “Don’t!”
“Imagine how much we could win if we could see the future!” Ted said, still frozen in place. “We’d be set for life!”
“He’s lying!” I shouted.
“I cannot lie,” Malcolm replied with amusement. “You know this.”
“I’ll just bet twenty,” Ted called back. “I’ll still have the one, so I’ll still be free!”
I kept screaming, but Ted staggered toward that open door and pushed within. Fully gruesome now, Malcolm gave me a maggot-filled smile—and the door shut of its own accord.
Opening and closing the rotted wood a few times, I discovered nothing but a musty and abandoned church within. I could also now see that the cars parked outside were rusted and ancient, with models ranging from modern to classic. Those that had come here over the last fifty years had never left. Surely I wasn’t the first to turn down the blue soul money? How had I never heard of—
The old man at the bar.
His bitterness.
He’d lost somebody here, to this place, to Malcolm, and Ted had been an obviously doomed soul from the start. Telling him had simply sped up the inevitable.
I began the long walk home. I was alone now, but that was no longer my biggest fear. I’d done my part. I’d pulled a lucky last-minute move and saved Ted from a demon uniquely suited to his flaws—but he’d chosen to go back anyway. There was nothing I could do but go on alone and wonder when my own particular brand of demon would fall across my path. On that day, I, too, would be lost. Thus was born Malcolm’s demonic confidence: even with friends to offer one last chance at escape, we are all human.
We are each our own doom.

So I had a request from u/nightride to share this one. I realize I'd had a few people request it so I'd written it but filed it away in a Word Doc and never posted it. It's hard to share. I'm super bitter about it. Maybe you guy's can tell me if I'm overreacting but looking back I still cringe. Rereading it now just huuuurts. And just a forewarning DH is an ass in this one. This is just as much about him enabling his brother's crap as it is his brother being crappy. But here it is and it's long.
So altogether my wedding was almost everything I wanted it to be. The ceremony was. It was perfect. 3 years and 7 years into our relationship we got engaged and neither time worked out. My anxiety, zero knowledge on how to plan a wedding, no money, and moms and aunts trying to "help" resulted in me calling it off both times. I can't do attention and I can't do crowds so I never wanted a big wedding.
About a two years ago Hubs and I were in the kitchen discussing my medical issues. Mostly non emergency stuff that I've been putting off for years because I haven't had insurance. Hubs has great insurance and he said enough is enough, let's get married so you can get taken care of.
I asked him if he's serious. Because I never wanted a court house wedding but I can't handle a huge affair and we couldn't afford it anyway. And that was always our sticking point. He's usually a go big or go home type guy and with our families the guest list would have been at least into the 200's. This would have to be small for it to work.
Long story a little less long, we have a private ceremony at my Grandma's lake cabin with our 22-24 immediate family. No flowers (my Grandma has award winning gardens for Christ sake), no professional photographer (my ma borrows uncles Cannons, and step sis IL's girlfriend uses her's), my dress is amazing designer shit that I scored for 176 usd, Minion 2 is in SIL's first communion dress, and all the boys were in black slacks, white dress shirts and bow ties. Cheap but ended up looking really classy.
The wedding, in all, cost less than 3000 but we all looked amazing. We went for a 20's theme without getting costumy and over the top with it and I was happy. It looked and felt classy as shit.
After the short but adorable ceremony, a bride and groom boat ride on the lake, and pictures, we all went to the hotel casino 20 minutes away. Half of the guests were staying there anyway and they have an amazing seafood buffet. After dinner everyone meets at Bar 1 and I decide I need to go change. My corset wasn't helping me breathe and with the attention and crowd I needed a breather so SIL and my bro (my best man) take me away to change into my cocktail dress. My ma took Minion Duty. Plopped herself at a table in front of the pool and watched the kids for the rest of the night so we could party. I was bummed because I wanted her with us but it was better than stuffing the kids in our hotel room the rest of the night and she wanted quality time with them. So once they were settled at the pool and everyone else was settled at the bar, I go to change into my second dress.
Let's pause for a second. I have to explain this cocktail dress I'm changing into. DH picked it out. We went dress shopping for a friend's wedding and he saw this on the rack and insisted I had to try it on. I explained to him that no, I couldn't wear this to another person's wedding because it was white. It was a white, form fitting mid thigh length with a strip of black lace down the front. Too risqué and way too white. He made me try it on anyway and fell in love. He was drooling more than our dog. He needed me to have this dress. So we bought it but got a different dress for this friends wedding. Lo and behold, a few months after is when we decided to get married so this was the perfect after-party dress. DH loved my wedding dress but this cocktail dress was something he himself picked out for me and was now pining to eh hem.. peel off on our wedding night.
So back to the story. I change into this thing that makes me look even more like 1920's honey on the town and I'm loving it because I know how excited DH is to see me in it all dolled up. Guys. I looked gooooooood. So I change, I can finally breath and we came back down to the bar.. and find BIL1 and BIL2 are in their street clothes...
My brother's are still dressed to the nines and looking slick as shit even with their sleeve rolled up. And the BILs are in jeans, T-shirts, and camo print ball caps that make them look like the small town locals that they are. All of the rest of the pictures from that night look... weird. We have this group of classic rock stars then two dudes in T-shirts. Definitely BEC, but I don't know. I'm usually not a dresser upper. Mostly I dress down but that night I was diggin the classy vibe and it really bummed me out that they couldn't tough it out for a few hours. Because, you know, it's their brother's wedding?
DH had that shit eating grin on his face though and cuddled up close the moment he saw me so the rest barely registered in my brain. I let it go and went with the flow.
There were two bars in the hotel/casino. We initially met up at the lower level bar. After a few drinks the plan was to separate, do a slot or craps game or two and then head up to the upper level bar that had a band and a beautiful balcony. MIL insisted we take pictures on the balcony of Hub's taking my garter. This fucking garter as been cutting off circulation to my thigh for a good 11 hours now so I'm game to get this cheesy tradition over with for her. My plan is to go hang out with my ma and the minions at the pool and then meet them at the second bar. (I don't gamble and I feel bad my ma is stuck with the kids. I wanted to celebrate with her)
Half hour later I say goodbye to Ma and the kids again and I find the bar upstairs. Nobodies there. I wait a bit and grab a drink. I try socializing with strangers as is customary at a bar like I'm used to but nobody seems interested. I suppose at a casino the atmosphere is different? Everyone just sort of stared at me but wouldn't talk. Not even a smile or congratulatory drink. I even buy a round on me for the 8 or 9 people there. They all sort of just smile and cheers and go back to just staring at me. Wth? I just shrug it off, finish my drink and waited for my party.
So I got sick of that when still nobody showed up and go tour the casino to see if I can find anyone. I find FIL and SMIL. They tell me they'll meet me up stairs and promise to rope in anyone they see on the way.
Since I'm right back by the pool I check in with the kids and Ma again and ask if she'd seen anyone come down. Bro's have both come to say hi to the kids. Dad, MIL and SFIL have all come down, too. Dad had to leave for legit reasons and had said goodbye to me personally prior to leaving the first bar. I text MIL and she says her and SFIL or going to bed..
Basically my plan for the casino was that there was plenty for everyone. If you like to gamble, dance, drink, swim. It was all there. In hindsight though, it left me looking for people to celebrate my wedding night with. I was all alone.
I go back to the upper level bar and order a drink. I send a mass text out that I'm up there waiting and then proceed to try to enjoy the band since it'd started up and converse with people again. Nobody wants to talk to me!! Wtf?? I'm sorry, maybe it's different other places but where I'm from you make friends at the bar. You shoot the shit. If I saw a bride, I'd buy her a fucking drink to congratulate her. Maybe it was it because I was the bride? This wasn't a huge casino, most people knew we were part of a wedding party. I would have imagined I'd at least have easy conversation starters. I started really realizing people were actively avoiding me. Were these looks of pity??
Before I realized this I was happy and friendly. Once a noticed, I got depressed. So, all of you reading this. Have any of you in the last ten paragraphs screamed SHE'S THE BRIDE! where the hell is the fucking groom!!?? This had occurred to me too. So I text him privately. And here I will transcribe word for word; italics are mine:
Me: Where you at?
Hubs: [BIL1] and I are taking a walk and having a talk about brotherly love shit (He knows I know what he means. This happens when BIL1 gets drunk. He gets sentimental and ropes Hubs into these droning, emotional dicussions) This is my Bachelor speech. (ah. I see. BIL1 had a chance to have a bachelor party for his big brother but he didn't because of the Dog Situation. So now he's going to try to have an impromptu bachelor party on our fucking wedding night?? Um no. You're not a bachelor anymore honey..)
Me: We can do this back at the cabin. It's our wedding night.
Hubs: I know. It's a close talk. Give me 20 minutes. I'm sorry.
Me: I'm at the bar waiting. Alone.
(Half hour later)
Me: Bride's at the bar alone. Still. Bad juju.
Hubs: I know. It's a LONG walk. Not my choice. Sorry.
Me: You did chose to go spend your wedding night with your brother instead of your wife...
Hubs: I no sry will tell you about it later. It was worth it.
...Imsorrywutnow? It was worth it? Hgfgjhhgfghh, wat? Did he just say it was worth it to leave his bride on our wedding night? At that moment I assumed maybe with the whole Dog Situation that they were burying the hatchet and BIL1 actually gave some sort of amazing, heartfelt apology. Not that I think that would be "worth" abandoning your wife on your wedding night but if it was anything I thought it would at least be that. But no.
Here's what was so "worth it" after I got the whole explanation from DH later: BIL1 "dragged" Hubs to a bar off the casino reservation. He did some sentimental run of the mill pep talk (at least that's what Hubs says- sometimes I wonder if he left out some details of BIL's heart to heart that might offend me), then when everyone at this bar saw Hubs dressed up they bought him shots to celebrate his wedding. (While zero people would even fucking talk to me while I was in the same situation at the same time- glad he got to have a great time..)
I gave up waiting for him and went to hang out with my Ma. Was sick of buying 8 dollar drinks at a bar while people ignored me. As I walk into the pool area my brothers find me and we all hang out. They'd found out from ma that I was looking for Hubs and had went looking for him too. Filled them in on why they couldn't find him. I was putting a brave face on, I was all smiles but I think bros knew. They were going out of their way for me. I don't know, maybe it actually just was because I was the bride and that's what you're suppose to do. So they decide the plan now is that we're doing back to the cabin for a bonfire and booze which they know is my favorite, Ma offered to be designated driver since BIL2 had initially offered as our wedding gift from him but then decided to drink. Thanks dude. So we're just waiting for Hubs. I text him and tell him he has 20 minutes to be in front of me or I'm legit leaving with or without him.
So here we are as I wait, my brothers and I, two dashing young men and a woman with a red lip and finger curls (Seriously all I was missing was that long cigarette holder thingie the dames used to use), hanging out with some whiskey old fashions by the pool watching my kids having fun in the water. It wasn't long before my brothers found shenanigans to get up to. The dress shoes were kicked off and into the water they dive.
I should have known it would happen. And I was finally having fun and laughing. I love my brothers. And here they are tossing their niece and nephew around in the water just like uncles are best at, only this one time, there are bow ties and suspenders. I shouldn't have put my phone down though...
Yup! I ended up in the pool. My Best Man (bro1) asked for a sip of my drink. I hand it to him. He puts in on the table unsipped, scooped me up, and takes a running jump into the pool. I have to say, even soaking wet my makeup stayed. There's a picture of right after I emerge to the surface with a surprised look on my face and my brother right next to me with a big O face that says "Oh Shit! I think I crossed the line!!"
He didn't though. He had to help me back out because I couldn't walk in the water in my heels but he actually made me happy. He made my night better. My Hubs wasn't anywhere to be found but my brothers came through for me on my wedding night.
Not long after, Hubs shows up with BIL1. BIL1 is now drunk and crabby. Didn't say one word to me. We used to be so close... Hubs is drunk and happy. Until he finds out I took a dive in the pool. He loved that dress on me and couldn't wait to get me into bed with it on. Now he was pissed at me that the chlorine might ruin it. Dude, Fuck right off. Maybe you should have been there to stop it. Two years later- maybe forever- I'll never quite forgive how he abandoned me for his brother on our wedding night then had the gall to be mad that I ruined my dress.
Ma drives me, Hubs, and my bros back to the cabin. BIL1 and SIL were invited too but BIL1 holed up in his hotel room and gave SIL shit for wanting to come without him. They had a fight that night but I didn't care to be her listening ear at the moment since it was my wedding night (duh).
We get to the cabin and said goodbye to Ma who was driving back to the hotel to stay with the kids for the night (saint), I carried Hubs up to the cabin where he promptly passed out on the couch, and me and my brothers took a few leftover bottles of champagne and went fishing on the dock until morning.
Hubs was mad, even for months after, that he didn't get some that night. It took much explaining for him to understand that A) He deserted me on our wedding night B) He told me it was worth it to do so and hang out with his brother and random strangers getting free shots instead C) He got so drunk his wife had to carry him over the threshold and dump him on the couch where he then passes out. I couldn't have "gotten some" had I wanted it. The moment my brother and I flopped him on the couch he crumbled and passed right out. Why I even have to explain that he has no right to be pissed off pisses me off. I still don't think he gets it though now he knows better than to give me shit for it.
I was depressingly sober, stressed, and straight up sad by the time we got back to the cabin. I'll never forget that his brother came first on our wedding night.
I love my Hubs. In this story he's a piece of shit and I'm painting him in a horrible light, but I just can't get over it to present it with less bias. It's part of the reason I don't want the "Wedding Reception to be held at a later date" Will he just desert me again? Will he allow his brother to steal him away again on some power play or grab for attention? He has all the time in the world to have one on one time with his brother but he chose our wedding night instead. And somehow I'm expected to be ok with that. Fuck that noice.
Even though we're maaaaybe starting to reconcile now it still just feels like such a slap in the face. BIL1 couldn't be fucked to hold a bachelor party for his brother so he stole him away from his wife on his wedding night for some drunken rant. And then to further remind me that I don't come first, my husband, after 12 years together told me "it was worth it". Just stings man.
