Is it time for the Labour Party to finally back Proportional Representation before the next General Election?

While Keir Starmer and the current Labour Frontbench seem almost scared to even consider announcing new party policies, I wanted to raise a discussion on whether or not it is finally time that the Labour Party formally backs Proportional Representation as our new voting system.
It is no secret that the current electoral system is a flawed two party system and favours the Conservative Party too much, which will now be made worse by the upcoming electoral boundary changes that are essentially gerrymandering in all but name.
Labour have been out of power for over ten years now and the party faces a mammoth task to try and gain around 120 seats in the next election if they want to have a majority of just one. Landslides like this have happened in the past with the likes of Tony Blair, however the odds are very slim and I feel the stakes are too high to gamble on the small chances of Labour managing to pull this off.
Henceforth I believe it is time that Labour backs Proportional Representation and encourages the smaller parties of Westminster - namely the Liberal Democrats and the Greens - to lend them their votes in the next election and stand aside in key target sides in order to ensure Labour wins a majority in the next election so that they can roll through Proportional Representation.
This is in Labour's interest in order to finally get the murderous Conservatives out of Westminster, end austerity after eleven years of it and put through a more progressive and representative voting system.
The political union has also been greatly threatened in recent years following strong support for Scottish Independence and Northern Ireland being threatened with different treatment to the rest of the UK in recent Brexit talks. With much of the United Kingdom feeling more disunited, having a more balanced voting system in Proportional Representation could help to restore faith in our democracy and truly make all votes across the entire country count, with all voices of the UK - English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish - being included.
After years of political instability and uncertainty, coupled with the diminished odds of Labour securing a majority in the next General Election and thousands being indirectly murdered by the Conservatives through austerity and deliberate Lockdown in-competencies, I feel that it is in the national interest for the voting system to be changed to Proportional Representation and that Labour are the only ones who can deliver it.

WHEN confronted with a problem involving the use of the reasoning faculties, individuals of strong intellect keep their poise, and seek to reach a solution by obtaining facts bearing upon the question. Those of immature mentality, on the other hand, when similarly confronted, are overwhelmed. While the former may be qualified to solve the riddle of their own destiny, the latter must be led like a flock of sheep and taught in simple language. They depend almost entirely upon the ministrations of the shepherd. The Apostle Paul said that these little ones must be fed with milk, but that meat is the food of strong men. Thoughtlessness is almost synonymous with childishness, while thoughtfulness is symbolic of maturity.
There are, however, but few mature minds in the world; and thus it was that the philosophic-religious doctrines of the pagans were divided to meet the needs of these two fundamental groups of human intellect--one philosophic, the other incapable of appreciating the deeper mysteries of life. To the discerning few were revealed the esoteric, or spiritual, teachings, while the unqualified many received only the literal, or exoteric, interpretations. In order to make simple the great truths of Nature and the abstract principles of natural law, the vital forces of the universe were personified, becoming the gods and goddesses of the ancient mythologies. While the ignorant multitudes brought their offerings to the altars of Priapus and Pan (deities representing the procreative energies), the wise recognized in these marble statues only symbolic concretions of great abstract truths.
In all cities of the ancient world were temples for public worship and offering. In every community also were philosophers and mystics, deeply versed in Nature's lore. These individuals were usually banded together, forming seclusive philosophic and religious schools. The more important of these groups were known as the Mysteries. Many of the great minds of antiquity were initiated into these secret fraternities by strange and mysterious rites, some of which were extremely cruel. Alexander Wilder defines the Mysteries as "Sacred dramas performed at stated periods. The most celebrated were those of Isis, Sabazius, Cybele, and Eleusis." After being admitted, the initiates were instructed in the secret wisdom which had been preserved for ages. Plato, an initiate of one of these sacred orders, was severely criticized because in his writings he revealed to the public many of the secret philosophic principles of the Mysteries.
Every pagan nation had (and has) not only its state religion, but another into which the philosophic elect alone have gained entrance. Many of these ancient cults vanished from the earth without revealing their secrets, but a few have survived the test of ages and their mysterious symbols are still preserved. Much of the ritualism of Freemasonry is based on the trials to which candidates were subjected by the ancient hierophants before the keys of wisdom were entrusted to them.
Few realize the extent to which the ancient secret schools influenced contemporary intellects and, through those minds, posterity. Robert Macoy, 33°, in his General History of Freemasonry, pays a magnificent tribute to the part played by the ancient Mysteries in the rearing of the edifice of human culture. He says, in part: "It appears that all the perfection of civilization, and all the advancement made in philosophy, science, and art among the ancients are due to those institutions which, under the veil of mystery, sought to illustrate the sublimest truths of religion, morality, and virtue, and impress them on the hearts of their disciples.* * * Their chief object was to teach the doctrine of one God, the resurrection of man to eternal life, the dignity of the human soul, and to lead the people to see the shadow of the deity, in the beauty, magnificence, and splendor of the universe."
With the decline of virtue, which has preceded the destruction of every nation of history, the Mysteries became perverted. Sorcery took the place of the divine magic. Indescribable practices (such as the Bacchanalia) were introduced, and perversion ruled supreme; for no institution can be any better than the members of which it is composed. In despair, the few who were true sought to preserve the secret doctrines from oblivion. In some cases they succeeded, but more often the arcanum was lost and only the empty shell of the Mysteries remained.
Thomas Taylor has written, "Man is naturally a religious animal." From the earliest dawning of his consciousness, man has worshiped and revered things as symbolic of the invisible, omnipresent, indescribable Thing, concerning which he could discover practically nothing. The pagan Mysteries opposed the Christians during the early centuries of their church, declaring that the new faith (Christianity) did not demand virtue and integrity as requisites for salvation. Celsus expressed himself on the subject in the following caustic terms:
"That I do not, however, accuse the Christians more bitterly than truth compels, may be conjectured from hence, that the cryers who call men to other mysteries proclaim as follows: 'Let him approach whose hands are pure, and whose words are wise.' And again, others proclaim: 'Let him approach who is pure from all wickedness, whose soul is not conscious of any evil, and who leads a just and upright life.' And these things are proclaimed by those who promise a purification from error. Let us now hear who those are that are called to the Christian mysteries: Whoever is a sinner, whoever is unwise, whoever is a fool, and whoever, in short, is miserable, him the kingdom of God will receive. Do you not, therefore, call a sinner, an unjust man, a thief, a housebreaker, a wizard, one who is sacrilegious, and a robber of sepulchres? What other persons would the cryer nominate, who should call robbers together?"
It was not the true faith of the early Christian mystics that Celsus attacked, but the false forms that were creeping in even during his day. The ideals of early Christianity were based upon the high moral standards of the pagan Mysteries, and the first Christians who met under the city of Rome used as their places of worship the subterranean temples of Mithras, from whose cult has been borrowed much of the sacerdotalism of the modem church.
The ancient philosophers believed that no man could live intelligently who did not have a fundamental knowledge of Nature and her laws. Before man can obey, he must understand, and the Mysteries were devoted to instructing man concerning the operation of divine law in the terrestrial sphere. Few of the early cults actually worshiped anthropomorphic deities, although their symbolism might lead one to believe they did. They were moralistic rather than religionistic; philosophic rather than theologic. They taught man to use his faculties more intelligently, to be patient in the face of adversity, to be courageous when confronted by danger, to be true in the midst of temptation, and, most of all, to view a worthy life as the most acceptable sacrifice to God, and his body as an altar sacred to the Deity.
Sun worship played an important part in nearly all the early pagan Mysteries. This indicates the probability of their Atlantean origin, for the people of Atlantis were sun worshipers. The Solar Deity was usually personified as a beautiful youth, with long golden hair to symbolize the rays of the sun. This golden Sun God was slain by wicked ruffians, who personified the evil principle of the universe. By means of certain rituals and ceremonies, symbolic of purification and regeneration, this wonderful God of Good was brought back to life and became the Savior of His people. The secret processes whereby He was resurrected symbolized those cultures by means of which man is able to overcome his lower nature, master his appetites, and give expression to the higher side of himself. The Mysteries were organized for the purpose of assisting the struggling human creature to reawaken the spiritual powers which, surrounded by the flaming.

Montfaucon describes the figure as follows: "Upon her head is an episcopal mitre, adorned on the lower part with towers and pinnacles; over the gate of the city is a crescent, and beneath the circuit of the walls a crown of rays. The Goddess wears a sort of surplice, exactly like the surplice of a priest or bishop; and upon the surplice a tunic, which falls down to the legs; and over all an episcopal cope, with the twelve signs of the Zodiac wrought on the borders. The figure hath a lion on each side, and holds in its left hand a Tympanum, a Sistrum, a Distaff, a Caduceus, and another instrument. In her right hand she holds with her middle finger a thunderbolt, and upon the same am animals, insects, and, as far as we may guess, flowers, fruit, a bow, a quiver, a torch, and a scythe." In the ancient world, nearly all the secret societies were philosophic and religious. During the mediæval centuries, they were chiefly religious and political, although a few philosophic schools remained. In modern times, secret societies, in the Occidental countries, are largely political or fraternal, although in a few of them, as in Masonry, the ancient religious and philosophic principles still survive.
Space prohibits a detailed discussion of the secret schools. There were literally scores of these ancient cults, with branches in all parts of the Eastern and Western worlds. Some, such as those of Pythagoras and the Hermetists, show a decided Oriental influence, while the Rosicrucians, according to their own proclamations, gained much of their wisdom from Arabian mystics. Although the Mystery schools are usually associated with civilization, there is evidence that the most uncivilized peoples of prehistoric times had a knowledge of them. Natives of distant islands, many in the lowest forms of savagery, have mystic rituals and secret practices which, although primitive, are of a decided Masonic tinge.

THE DRUIDIC MYSTERIES OF BRITAIN AND GAUL

"The original and primitive inhabitants of Britain, at some remote period, revived and reformed their national institutes. Their priest, or instructor, had hitherto been simply named Gwydd, but it was considered to have become necessary to divide this office between the national, or superior, priest and another whose influence [would] be more limited. From henceforth the former became Der-Wydd (Druid), or superior instructor, and [the latter] Go-Wydd, or O-Vydd (Ovate), subordinate instructor; and both went by the general name of Beirdd (Bards), or teachers of wisdom. As the system matured and augmented, the Bardic Order consisted of three classes, the Druids, Beirdd Braint, or privileged Bards, and Ovates." The origin of the word Druid is under dispute. Max Müller believes that, like the Irish word Drui, it means "the men of the oak trees." He further draws attention to the fact that the forest gods and tree deities of the Greeks were called dryades. Some believe the word to be of Teutonic origin; others ascribe it to the Welsh. A few trace it to the Gaelic druidh, which means "a wise man" or "a sorcerer." In Sanskrit the word dru means "timber."
At the time of the Roman conquest, the Druids were thoroughly ensconced in Britain and Gaul. Their power over the people was unquestioned, and there were instances in which armies, about to attack each other, sheathed their swords when ordered to do so by the white-robed Druids. No undertaking of great importance was scatted without the assistance of these patriarchs, who stood as mediators between the gods and men. The Druidic Order is deservedly credited with having had a deep understanding of Nature and her laws. The Encyclopædia Britannica states that geography, physical science, natural theology, and astrology were their favorite studies. The Druids had a fundamental knowledge of medicine, especially the use of herbs and simples. Crude surgical instruments also have been found in England and Ireland. An odd treatise on early British medicine states that every practitioner was expected to have a garden or back yard for the growing of certain herbs necessary to his profession. Eliphas Levi, the celebrated transcendentalist, makes the following significant statement:
"The Druids were priests and physicians, curing by magnetism and charging amylets with their fluidic influence. Their universal remedies were mistletoe and serpents' eggs, because these substances attract the astral light in a special manner. The solemnity with which mistletoe was cut down drew upon this plant the popular confidence and rendered it powerfully magnetic. * * * The progress of magnetism will some day reveal to us the absorbing properties of mistletoe. We shall then understand the secret of those spongy growths which drew the unused virtues of plants and become surcharged with tinctures and savors. Mushrooms, truffles, gall on trees, and the different kinds of mistletoe will be employed with understanding by a medical science, which will be new because it is old * * * but one must not move quicker than science, which recedes that it may advance the further. Not only was the mistletoe sacred as symbolic of the universal medicine, or panacea, but also because of the fact that it grew upon the oak tree. Through the symbol of the oak, the Druids worshiped the Supreme Deity; therefore, anything growing upon that tree was sacred to Him. At certain seasons, according to the positions of the sun, moon, and stars, the Arch-Druid climbed the oak tree and cut the mistletoe with a golden sickle consecrated for that service. The parasitic growth was caught in white cloths provided for the purpose, lest it touch the earth and be polluted by terrestrial vibrations. Usually a sacrifice of a white bull was made under the tree.
The Druids were initiates of a secret school that existed in their midst. This school, which closely resembled the Bacchic and Eleusinian Mysteries of Greece or the Egyptian rites of Isis and Osiris, is justly designated the Druidic Mysteries. There has been much speculation concerning the secret wisdom that the Druids claimed to possess. Their secret teachings were never written, but were communicated orally to specially prepared candidates. Robert Brown, 32°, is of the opinion that the British priests secured their information from Tyrian and Phœnician navigators who, thousands of years before the Christian Era, established colonies in Britain and Gaul while searching for tin. Thomas Maurice, in his Indian Antiquities, discourses at length on Phœnician, Carthaginian, and Greek expeditions to the British Isles for the purpose of procuring tin. Others are of the opinion that the Mysteries as celebrated by the Druids were of Oriental origin, possibly Buddhistic.
The proximity of the British Isles to the lost Atlantis may account for the sun worship which plays an important part in the rituals of Druidism. According to Artemidorus, Ceres and Persephone were worshiped on an island close to Britain with rites and ceremonies similar to those of Samothrace. There is no doubt that the Druidic Pantheon includes a large number of Greek and Roman deities. This greatly amazed Cæsar during his conquest of Britain and Gaul, and caused him to affirm that these tribes adored Mercury, Apollo, Mars, and Jupiter, in a manner similar to that of the Latin countries. It is almost certain that the Druidic Mysteries were not indigenous to Britain or Gaul, but migrated from one of the more ancient civilizations.
The school of the Druids was divided into three distinct parts, and the secret teachings embodied therein are practically the same as the mysteries concealed under the allegories of Blue Lodge Masonry. The lowest of the three divisions was that of Ovate (Ovydd). This was an honorary degree, requiring no special purification or preparation. The Ovates dressed in green, the Druidic color of learning, and were expected to know something about medicine, astronomy, poetry if possible, and sometimes music. An Ovate was an individual admitted to the Druidic Order because of his general excellence and superior knowledge concerning the problems of life.
The second division was that of Bard (Beirdd). Its members were robed in sky-blue, to represent harmony and truth, and to them was assigned the labor of memorizing, at least in part, the twenty thousand verses of Druidic sacred poetry. They were often pictured with the primitive British or Irish harp--an instrument strung with human hair, and having as many strings as there were ribs on one side of the human body. These Bards were often chosen as teachers of candidates seeking entrance into the Druidic Mysteries. Neophytes wore striped robes of blue, green, and white, these being the three sacred colors of the Druidic Order.
The third division was that of Druid (Derwyddon). Its particular labor was to minister to the religious needs of the people. To reach this dignity, the candidate must first become a Bard Braint. The Druids always dressed in white--symbolic of their purity, and the color used by them to symbolize the sun.
In order to reach the exalted position of Arch-Druid, or spiritual head of the organization, it was necessary for a priest to pass through the six successive degrees of the Druidic Order. (The members of the different degrees were differentiated by the colors of their sashes, for all of them wore robes of white.) Some writers are of the opinion that the title of Arch-Druid was hereditary, descending from father to son, but it is more probable that the honor was conferred by ballot election. Its recipient was chosen for his virtues and

The most striking adornment of the Arch-Druid was the iodhan moran, or breastplate of judgment, which possessed the mysterious Power of strangling any who made an untrue statement while wearing it. Godfrey Higgins states that this breastplate was put on the necks of witnesses to test the veracity of their evidence. The Druidic tiara, or anguinum, its front embossed with a number of points to represent the sun's rays, indicated that the priest was a personification of the rising sun. On the front of his belt the Arch-Druid wore the liath meisicith--a magic brooch, or buckle in the center of which was a large white stone. To this was attributed the power of drawing the fire of the gods down from heaven at the priest's command This specially cut stone was a burning glass, by which the sun's rays were concentrated to light the altar fires. The Druids also had other symbolic implements, such as the peculiarly shaped golden sickle with which they cut the mistletoe from the oak, and the cornan, or scepter, in the form of a crescent, symbolic of the sixth day of the increasing moon and also of the Ark of Noah. An early initiate of the Druidic Mysteries related that admission to their midnight ceremony was gained by means of a glass boat, called Cwrwg Gwydrin. This boat symbolized the moon, which, floating upon the waters of eternity, preserved the seeds of living creatures within its boatlike crescent.

According to James Gardner, there were usually two Arch-Druids in Britain, one residing on the Isle of Anglesea and the other on the Isle of Man. Presumably there were others in Gaul. These dignitaries generally carried golden scepters and were crowned with wreaths of oak leaves, symbolic of their authority. The younger members of the Druidic Order were clean-shaven and modestly dressed, but the more aged had long gray beards and wore magnificent golden ornaments. The educational system of the Druids in Britain was superior to that of their colleagues on the Continent, and consequently many of the Gallic youths were sent to the Druidic colleges in Britain for their philosophical instruction and training.
Eliphas Levi states that the Druids lived in strict abstinence, studied the natural sciences, preserved the deepest secrecy, and admitted new members only after long probationary periods. Many of the priests of the order lived in buildings not unlike the monasteries of the modern world. They were associated in groups like ascetics of the Far East. Although celibacy was not demanded of them, few married. Many of the Druids retired from the world and lived as recluses in caves, in rough-stone houses, or in little shacks built in the depths of a forest. Here they prayed and medicated, emerging only to perform their religious duties.
James Freeman Clarke, in his Ten Great Religions, describes the beliefs of the Druids as follows: "The Druids believed in three worlds and in transmigration from one to the other: In a world above this, in which happiness predominated; a world below, of misery; and this present state. This transmigration was to punish and reward and also to purify the soul. In the present world, said they, Good and Evil are so exactly balanced that man has the utmost freedom and is able to choose or reject either. The Welsh Triads tell us there are three objects of metempsychosis: to collect into the soul the properties of all being, to acquire a knowledge of all things, and to get power to conquer evil. There are also, they say, three kinds of knowledge: knowledge of the nature of each thing, of its cause, and its influence. There are three things which continually grow less: darkness, falsehood, and death. There are three which constantly increase: light, life, and truth."
Like nearly all schools of the Mysteries, the teachings of the Druids were divided into two distinct sections. The simpler, a moral code, was taught to all the people, while the deeper, esoteric doctrine was given only to initiated priests. To be admitted to the order, a candidate was required to be of good family and of high moral character. No important secrets were intrusted to him until he had been tempted in many ways and his strength of character severely tried. The Druids taught the people of Britain and Gaul concerning the immortality of the soul. They believed in transmigration and apparently in reincarnation. They borrowed in one life, promising to pay back in the next. They believed in a purgatorial type of hell where they would be purged of their sins, afterward passing on to the happiness of unity with the gods. The Druids taught that all men would be saved, but that some must return to earth many times to learn the lessons of human life and to overcome the inherent evil of their own natures.
Before a candidate was intrusted with the secret doctrines of the Druids, he was bound with a vow of secrecy. These doctrines were imparted only in the depths of forests and in the darkness of caves. In these places, far from the haunts of men, the neophyte was instructed concerning the creation of the universe, the personalities of the gods, the laws of Nature, the secrets of occult medicine, the mysteries of the celestial bodies, and the rudiments of magic and sorcery. The Druids had a great number of feast days. The new and full moon and the sixth day of the moon were sacred periods. It is believed that initiations took place only at the two solstices and the two equinoxes. At dawn of the 25th day of December, the birth of the Sun God was celebrated.
The secret teachings of the Druids are said by some to be tinctured with Pythagorean philosophy. The Druids had a Madonna, or Virgin Mother, with a Child in her arms, who was sacred to their Mysteries; and their Sun God was resurrected at the time of the year corresponding to that at which modern Christians celebrate Easter.
Both the cross and the serpent were sacred to the Druids, who made the former by cutting off all the branches of an oak tree and fastening one of them to the main trunk in the form of the letter T. This oaken cross became symbolic of their superior Deity. They also worshiped the sun, moon, and stars. The moon received their special veneration. Caesar stated that Mercury was one of the chief deities of the Gauls. The Druids are believed to have worshiped Mercury under the similitude of a stone cube. They also had great veneration for the Nature spirits (fairies, gnomes, and undines), little creatures of the forests and rivers to whom many offerings were made. Describing the temples of the Druids, Charles Heckethorn, in The Secret Societies of All Ages & Countries, says:
"Their temples wherein the sacred fire was preserved were generally situate on eminences and in dense groves of oak, and assumed various forms--circular, because a circle was the emblem of the universe; oval, in allusion to the mundane egg, from which issued, according to the traditions of many nations, the universe, or, according to others, our first parents; serpentine, because a serpent was the symbol of Hu, the Druidic Osiris; cruciform, because a cross is an emblem of regeneration; or winged, to represent the motion of the Divine Spirit. * * * Their chief deities were reducible to two--a male and a female, the great father and mother--Hu and Ceridwen, distinguished by the same characteristics as belong to Osiris and Isis, Bacchus and Ceres, or any other supreme god and goddess representing the two principles of all Being."
Godfrey Higgins states that Hu, the Mighty, regarded as the first settler of Britain, came from a place which the Welsh Triads call the Summer Country, the present site of Constantinople. Albert Pike says that the Lost Word of Masonry is concealed in the name of the Druid god Hu. The meager information extant concerning the secret initiations of the Druids indicates a decided similarity between their Mystery school and the schools of Greece and Egypt. Hu, the Sun God, was murdered and, after a number of strange ordeals and mystic rituals, was restored to life.
There were three degrees of the Druidic Mysteries, but few successfully passed them all. The candidate was buried in a coffin, as symbolic of the death of the Sun God. The supreme test, however, was being sent out to sea in an open boat. While undergoing this ordeal, many lost their lives. Taliesin, an ancient scholar, who passed through the Mysteries, describes the initiation of the open boat in Faber's Pagan Idolatry. The few who passed this third degree were said to have been "born again," and were instructed in the secret and hidden truths which the Druid priests had preserved from antiquity. From these initiates were chosen many of the dignitaries of the British religious and political world. THE RITES OF MITHRAS

When the Persian Mysteries immigrated into Southern Europe, they were quickly assimilated by the Latin mind. The cult grew rapidly, especially among the Roman soldiery, and during the Roman wars of conquest the teachings were carried by the legionaries to nearly all parts of Europe. So powerful did the cult of Mithras become that at least one Roman Emperor was initiated into the order, which met in caverns under the city of Rome. Concerning the spread of this Mystery school through different parts of Europe, C. W. King, in his Gnostics and Their Remains, says:
"Mithraic bas-reliefs cut on the faces of rocks or on stone tablets still abound in the countries formerly the western provinces of the Roman Empire; many exist in Germany, still more in France, and in this island (Britain) they have often been discovered on the line of the Picts' Wall and the noted one at Bath."
Alexander Wilder, in his Philosophy and Ethics of the Zoroasters, states that Mithras is the Zend title for the sun, and he is supposed to dwell within that shining orb. Mithras has a male and a female aspect, though not himself androgynous. As Mithras, he is the ford of the sun, powerful and radiant, and most magnificent of the Yazatas (Izads, or Genii, of the sun). As Mithra, this deity represents the feminine principle; the mundane universe is recognized as her symbol. She represents Nature as receptive and terrestrial, and as fruitful only when bathed in the glory of the solar orb. The Mithraic cult is a simplification of the more elaborate teachings of Zarathustra (Zoroaster), the Persian fire magician.

The Druid temples of places of religious worship were not patterned after those of other nations. Most of their ceremonies were performed at night, either in thick groves of oak trees or around open-air altars built of great uncut stones. How these masses of rock were moved ahs not been satisfactorily explained. The most famous of their altars, a great stone ring of rocks, is Stonehenge, in Southwestern England. This structure, laid out on an astronomical basis, still stands, a wonder of antiquity.
According to the Persians, there coexisted in eternity two principles. The first of these, Ahura-Mazda, or Ormuzd, was the Spirit of Good. From Ormuzd came forth a number of hierarchies of good and beautiful spirits (angels and archangels). The second of these eternally existing principles was called Ahriman. He was also a pure and beautiful spirit, but he later rebelled against Ormuzd, being jealous of his power. This did not occur, however, until after Ormuzd had created light, for previously Ahriman had not been conscious of the existence of Ormuzd. Because of his jealousy and rebellion, Ahriman became the Spirit of Evil. From himself he individualized a host of destructive creatures to injure Ormuzd.
When Ormuzd created the earth, Ahriman entered into its grosser elements. Whenever Ormuzd did a good deed, Ahriman placed the principle of evil within it. At last when Ormuzd created the human race, Ahriman became incarnate in the lower nature of man so that in each personality the Spirit of Good and the Spirit of Evil struggle for control. For 3,000 years Ormuzd ruled the celestial worlds with light and goodness. Then he created man. For another 3,000 years he ruled man with wisdom, and integrity. Then the power of Ahriman began, and the struggle for the soul of man continues through the next period of 3,000 years. During the fourth period of 3,000 years, the power of Ahriman will be destroyed. Good will return to the world again, evil and death will be vanquished, and at last the Spirit of Evil will bow humbly before the throne of Ormuzd. While Ormuzd and Ahriman are struggling for control of the human soul and for supremacy in Nature, Mithras, God of Intelligence, stands as mediator between the two. Many authors have noted the similarity between mercury and Mithras. As the chemical mercury acts as a solvent (according to alchemists), so Mithras seeks to harmonize the two celestial opposites.
There are many points of resemblance between Christianity and the cult of Mithras. One of the reasons for this probably is that the Persian mystics invaded Italy during the first century after Christ and the early history of both cults was closely interwoven. The Encyclopædia Britannica makes the following statement concerning the Mithraic and Christian Mysteries:
"The fraternal and democratic spirit of the first communities, and their humble origin; the identification of the object of adoration with light and the sun; the legends of the shepherds with their gifts and adoration, the flood, and the ark; the representation in art of the fiery chariot, the drawing of water from the rock; the use of bell and candle, holy water and the communion; the sanctification of Sunday and of the 25th of December; the insistence on moral conduct, the emphasis placed on abstinence and self-control; the doctrine of heaven and hell, of primitive revelation, of the mediation of the Logos emanating from the divine, the atoning sacrifice, the constant warfare between good and evil and the final triumph of the former, the immortality of the soul, the last judgment, the resurrection of the flesh and the fiery destruction of the universe--[these] are some of the resemblances which, whether real or only apparent, enabled Mithraism to prolong its resistance to Christianity,"
The rites of Mithras were performed in caves. Porphyry, in his Cave of the Nymphs, states that Zarathustra (Zoroaster) was the first to consecrate a cave to the worship of God, because a cavern was symbolic of the earth, or the lower world of darkness. John P. Lundy, in his Monumental Christianity, describes the cave of Mithras as follows:
"But this cave was adorned with the signs of the zodiac, Cancer and Capricorn. The summer and winter solstices were chiefly conspicuous, as the gates of souls descending into this life, or passing out of it in their ascent to the Gods; Cancer being the gate of descent, and Capricorn of ascent. These are the two avenues of the immortals passing up and down from earth to heaven, and from heaven to earth."
The so-called chair of St. Peter, in Rome, was believed to have been used in one of the pagan Mysteries, possibly that of Mithras, in whose subterranean grottoes the votaries of the Christian Mysteries met in the early days of their faith. In Anacalypsis, Godfrey Higgins writes that in 1662, while cleaning this sacred chair of Bar-Jonas, the Twelve Labors of Hercules were discovered upon it, and that later the French discovered upon the same chair the Mohammedan confession of faith, written in Arabic.
Initiation into the rites of Mithras, like initiation into many other ancient schools of philosophy, apparently consisted of three important degrees. Preparation for these degrees consisted of self-purification, the building up of the intellectual powers, and the control of the animal nature. In the first degree the candidate was given a crown upon the point of a sword and instructed in the mysteries of Mithras' hidden power. Probably he was taught that the golden crown represented his own spiritual nature, which must be objectified and unfolded before he could truly glorify Mithras; for Mithras was his own soul, standing as mediator between Ormuzd, his spirit, and Ahriman, his animal nature. In the second degree he was given the armor of intelligence and purity and sent into the darkness of subterranean pits to fight the beasts of lust, passion, and degeneracy. In the third degree he was given a cape, upon which were drawn or woven the signs of the zodiac and other astronomical symbols. After his initiations were over, he was hailed as one who had risen from the dead, was instructed in the secret teachings of the Persian mystics, and became a full-fledged member of the order. Candidates who successfully passed the Mithraic initiations were called Lions and were marked upon their foreheads with the Egyptian cross. Mithras himself is often pictured with the head of a lion and two pairs of wings. Throughout the entire ritual were repeated references to the birth of Mithras as the Sun God, his sacrifice for man, his death that men might have eternal life, and lastly, his resurrection and the saving of all humanity by his intercession before the throne of Ormuzd. While the cult of Mithras did not reach the philosophic heights attained by Zarathustra, its effect upon the civilization of the Western world was far-reaching, for at one time nearly all Europe was converted to its doctrines. Rome, in her intercourse with other nations, inoculated them with her religious principles; and many later institutions have exhibited Mithraic culture. The reference to the "Lion" and the "Grip of the Lion's Paw" in the Master Mason's degree have a strong Mithraic tinge and may easily have originated from this cult. A ladder of seven rungs appears in the Mithraic initiation. Faber is of the opinion that this ladder was originally a pyramid of seven steps. It is possible that the Masonic ladder with seven rungs had its origin in this Mithraic symbol. Women were never permitted to enter the Mithraic Order, but children of the male sex were initiates long before they reached maturity. The refusal to permit women to join the Masonic Order may be based on the esoteric reason given in the secret instructions of the Mithraics. This cult is another excellent example of those secret societies whose legends are largely symbolic representations of the sun and his journey through the houses of the heavens. Mithras, rising from a stone, is merely the sun rising over the horizon, or, as the ancients supposed, out of the horizon, at the vernal equinox.
John O'Neill disputes the theory that Mithras was intended as a solar deity. In The Night of the Gods he writes: "The Avestan Mithra, the yazata of light, has '10,000 eyes, high, with full knowledge (perethuvaedayana), strong, sleepless and ever awake (jaghaurvaunghem).'The supreme god Ahura Mazda also has one Eye, or else it is said that 'with his eyes, the sun, moon and stars, he sees everything.' The theory that Mithra was originally a title of the supreme heavens-god--putting the sun out of court--is the only one that answers all requirements. It will be evident that here we have origins in abundance for the Freemason's Eye and 'its nunquam dormio.'" The reader must nor confuse the Persian Mithra with the Vedic Mitra. According to Alexander Wilder, "The Mithraic rites superseded the Mysteries of Bacchus, and became the foundation of the Gnostic system, which for many centuries prevailed in Asia, Egypt, and even the remote West."

The most famous sculpturings and reliefs of this prototokos show Mithras kneeling upon the recumbent form of a great bull, into whose throat he is driving a sword. The slaying of the bull signifies that the rays of the sun, symbolized by the sword, release at the vernal equinox the vital essences of the earth--the blood of the bull--which, pouring from the wound made by the Sun God, fertilize the seeds of living things. Dogs were held sacred to the cult of Mithras, being symbolic of sincerity and trustworthiness. The Mithraics used the serpent a an emblem of Ahriman, the Spirit of Evil, and water rats were held sacred to him. The bull is esoterically the Constellation of Taurus; the serpent, its opposite in the zodiac, Scorpio; the sun, Mithras, entering into the side of the bull, slays the celestial creature and nourishes the universe with its blood.

The Church of the Nativity at Bethlehem confirms the theory that Jesus was born in a grotto, or cave. According to Dupuis, Mithras was put to death by crucifixion and rose again on the third day.

A brief note about me and why you should or shouldn't care what I think:
I was born in San Francisco*, California in the late 1980s (👴 lmao), and grew up there through the '90s and '00s.
\No, not Moraga. Not Mill Valley. Not Sunnyvale. SAN FRANCISCO. You moron. You absolute dolt.)
I've worked for small startups and watched them become major publicly-traded tech firms.
I've worked for local government and watched planning professionals drive themselves insane from knowing how to fix things but not having the political mandate to act on that knowledge.
I've mansplained to more than my fair share of people who didn't really care why San Francisco is the way that it is today. And you can be next!

Introduction: "The City" as Everything but a City

Few cities carry as much symbolism as San Francisco. When you consider that San Francisco is a city of not even a million people, its outsize presence in our cultural zeitgeist becomes all the more notable.
For progressives, the city is a besieged bohemian mecca - at once quaint and visionary, and under siege by a looming neoliberal order.
For conservatives, it's an anarchic disastrous mess where unchecked liberal policies have produced a petri dish of societal failure and hedonism, all funded by extreme taxation.
For liberals, it's a hub of technological innovation paradoxically situated precisely where innovation seems most squandered, where byzantine regulations on business and development stymie America's best opportunity to advance into the next century on the backs of immigrant innovators.
All three would likely agree with the assessment of Paul Kanter of Jefferson Airplane:
San Francisco is 49 square miles surrounded by reality.
But how did it wind up that way?

Part One: Pre-Industrial San Francisco

Prior to European settlement, what is now San Francisco was Ohlone Indian territory. They were getting along pretty nicely until the Spaniards came up from Mexico with all their missionary bullshit, and that involved a lot of not leaving the Ohlone alone...Things kinda went downhill for the California native population from there in a big way. (Like in a genocide way.)
In the mean time these American people are super into this Manifest Destiny thing and so Alta California starts to have a big illegal immigrant problem from the United States. The San Francisco Bay is by far the best place to anchor a ship on the West Coast, what with the deep calm water and all, so all these illegal immigrants set up a little town called Yerba Buena*. Eventually they decide they're not content just genociding the native people, but also want voting rights and the ability to own the land they're genociding people on, so they go to Sonoma which is one of the only places the Mexicans have guns and they LARP a revolution.

It's not the US military doing the LARPing at first but they're definitely super down with it so they decide get in on the fun too and, bingo bango, California's a state now.
Again, brief interlude, and I cannot stress this enough...this whole story REALLY sucks if you're an Ohlone Indian. Like, you're basically being shot and raped murdered by everyone else involved.
So anyway this statehood thing was perfect timing for the Americans because it was only a couple years later that this guy John Sutter sees something shiny in the water. Turns out people will basically crawl over a mountain range or get scurvy and shit themselves around Cape Horn just to get some of this cool shiny stuff, and that's exactly what they did.
So a metric shitload of people came to California starting in 1849. Most were from the Eastern parts of America, but many were from Mexico, Chile, the Philippines, France, and China. (The Chinese came to refer to San Francisco and the surrounding area as "Gold Mountain", and eventually, "Old Gold Mountain") These Forty-Niners were typically blue collar fortune-seekers. Ramshackle types from all over the world who thought they could change their fortunes with a dramatic change of scenery.
Basically right from the get-go, San Francisco was a mostly working class, pluralistic, multicultural and diverse place where people sought the next frontier of wealth, prosperity, and freedom. It was distant from the institutions and power structures that had established dominance in the East. A burgeoning independent metropolis and Capital of the Wild West.
This way of thinking about San Francisco is important because it basically still defines the San Franciscan identity, from the perspective of the people who actually live there, to this day.
TL;DR: San Francisco was:

Part Two: San Francisco as Western Industrial Powerhouse

What we're left with this point is a substantial, rapidly growing port city built around streetcars, horses and buggies, and shipping. It is the jumping-off point for any business endeavor pretty much anywhere in California's interior. And being so distant from the institutions of the East, it starts to develop its own institutions. Banks like Wells Fargo. The Southern Pacific Railroad. Levi Strauss Clothing Company. These dudes were ultimately the only ones to actually get rich from the Gold Rush.
Also still a really shitty place to be for an Ohlone Indian.
(By the way it was also a really shitty place to be Chinese pretty much from the Gold Rush onwards, too. Like, Supreme Court Case shitty....Not just once, either.)
The city caught fire and burned a lot, notably in 1851. This inspired the city to put a phoenix rising from the ashes on its flag. Then it all fell over in an earthquake and burned really good and properly this time in 1906. It rebuilt rapidly in time for the 1915 World's Fair.
This set the stage for what San Francisco would be for the next fifty years or so. An industrious, blue collar, capitalist metropolis. The gateway to the Pacific and the crown jewel of West Coast industry and innovation. A city dominated by organized labor, and, accordingly, progressive and sometimes even radical politics.
Then World War II happened and the U.S. was hella racist. They were hella racist against the Japanese people, to the point that they put them in concentration camps and made them abandon all their property. They were a little less racist to black people, and let them have jobs building planes and ships and stuff, but still too racist to let them fight in the war or live wherever they wanted. So a lot of black people moved to the Bay Area to help build planes and ships and stuff (plus it was still way better than staying in the South.)
With the limited places banks and neighborhood groups would let them live, a lot of them moved in to the existing working-class neighborhoods by the heavy industrial and shipbuilding facilities, and a lot of them moved into the place where the Japanese people had previously lived because, hey, I wonder why all these apartments are empty? Surely that's not a bad omen about how the government will treat minority communities, right?
So now the government has a black neighborhood on its hands and it's very inconveniently right next to some important stuff. Not to be racist (by the way just so you know one of my friends is black) but I think that means the neighborhood is "blighted" because of, you know...all that jazz. So they decided to do a Robert Moses all over the place and kick all the black people out and bulldoze their homes and stuff.
As you can imagine, a lot of minority community groups have wound up being pretty skeptical as a general rule of the vision laid out by mostly white politicians and urban planners for the future of San Francisco as it pertains to their communities.
So, in 1940, San Francisco was 95% white, but right after the war that number started falling steadily. It never stopped, and around the mid-1990s or so San Francisco became a majority-minority city, which it still is to this day.
Meanwhile the government was basically subsidizing suburban sprawl, building urban freeways and giving out super lucrative home loans to veterans (minorities need not apply). White people who were TOTALLY not racist but were just CONCERNED about the increasing diversity of inner cities started moving out in large numbers. In San Francisco they were largely replaced by immigrants. Overall the population began to decline around 1950 and wouldn't reach 1950 levels again until 2000. In contrast, the Bay Area was still rapidly growing by way of suburban sprawl. The population of the entire Bay Area almost doubles over this same timeframe, from 2.6 million to 6.7 million.
From an economic perspective, by the time the Vietnam War rolls around, the military figures out it can ship things a lot faster and cheaper if it miniaturizes the concept of a warehouse into a weatherized steel box, and then uses trucks and cranes in big lots by the water to load and unload these new "shipping containers" directly on and off ships.
Well, the problem is, the San Francisco isn't really set up for this. And it's not exactly a cheap, easy, or even smart idea to try to change that. So they do it in Oakland instead. And in only a few years, San Francisco loses its status as the primary shipping and industrial city of the Bay. American manufacturing declines generally, but even what little of it stays in the Bay Area doesn't stay in San Francisco.
The city of San Francisco lost twelve thousand manufacturing jobs between 1962 and 1972, the years when most of the Edgewater Homeless were adolescents. (Arthur D. Little Inc. 1975). The Edgewater Boulevard corridor, which had provided employment for most of the residents in the neighborhood up the hill, were particularly hard hit. Most of San Francisco's largest factories were located off Edgewater. It was also the hub for the region's transportation, communications, and utility sectors, including the Southern Pacific Railroad and, most important, the shipyards. Throughout the mid-1950s, the Hunters Point navy shipyard was the engine of heavy industry in San Francisco, with eighty-five hundred employees (Military Analysts Network 1998); but in 1974 it closed down.

Economists have shown statistically that high rents, high levels of income inequality, and low rental vacancy rates are the three variables most consistently associated with elevated levels of homelessness in any given city (Quigly et al. 2001; U.S. Bureau of the Census 2001). From the 1990s through the 2000s, San Francisco County ranked number one in the nation with respect to all these variables, and, predictably, its homeless population burgeoned.

So the city is pivoting away from being a blue-collar place where people live and work, and transitioning into a white-collar place where people commute to work, and otherwise pretty stagnant and kind of rife for the circumstances that bring the proliferation of homelessness. This defines the political order of the era. Planners and politicians are envisioning a new San Francisco, where it serves as the Manhattan to the Bay Area's New York, but with suburbs this time, if only they could stamp out all that blight.
TL;DR San Francisco is changing in the following ways in the middle of the 20th century:

Part Three: Flowers in your Hair

San Francisco's pluralism, its labor politics, and its independence from the hegemonic economic and cultural institutions of the regions to the East made it a mecca for free-thinking liberals and radicals well before the Vietnam War era. It was a working-class Catholic city, so in that sense it was fairly conservative, but it was also a cultural center of the Beat Movement. So when the counterculture movement gained steam across the Anglosphere in the 1960s, San Francisco was the place to be.
On January 14, 1967, a crowd of approximately 20-30,000 people gathered at the Polo Grounds in Golden Gate Park at what became known as the Human Be-In to suffer for fashion in the frigid San Francisco fog. In hindsight we understand this event to be the kickoff festivities of the Summer of Love.
The Human Be-In was the beginning of the story for thousands of people, many of whom would go on to take primary roles in San Francisco's revolution.

"When it started out, the city was antiblack, antigay, antiwoman. It was a very uptight Irish Catholic city," said Brian Rohan, [Michael] Stepanian's legal sidekick and another brawling protégé of Vincent Hallinan. "We took on the cops, city hall, the Catholic Church. Vince Hallinan taught us never to be afraid of bullies."
By taking on the bullies, the new forces of freedom began to liberate San Francisco, neighborhood by neighborhood.

As Acemoglu and Robinson repeatedly emphasize in this subreddit's bible, Why Nations Fail: Peace, Prosperity, Poverty, and Read Another Book (Crown Publishing Group, 2012), societies prosper when they produce inclusive institutions, and they collapse when they are subject to extractive institutions. But San Francisco progressivism, with its roots in the 1960s counterculture movement, sought a way out of this equation.
This movement believed the institutions of American culture at the time were extractive. But they blamed this on the very existence of the institutions themselves*.* They didn't try to replace extractive institutions with inclusive ones. Instead they imagined a society which was basically free of institutions entirely.
In this view one certainly couldn't trust the government or the church to dictate what experiences might be pleasurable or useful, so best to just allow or try everything. Some experiential and psychic explorers had wonderful insights and epiphanies, and they did break through to the other side, and some ended up with Jim Jones and the People's Temple.

This way of viewing the city was as a location for small, locally-grounded communities. Where interference from forces larger than the community brought only damage. This was fundamentally at odds with the global capitalist Manhattan-esque powerhouse that city planners envisioned for the place.
Where the planners were playing the role of Robert Moses, the new counterculture aligned with Jane Jacobs. They tended to believe, like her, that redevelopment, construction, change, etc...were threats. That in San Francisco's old 1800s construction there was community and culture, and that building over this old-ness would destroy that, as it had in the Fillmore when the city tried to get rid of all the black people...uh...blight. As Jacobs would put it:
Cities need old buildings so badly it is probably impossible for vigorous streets and districts to grow without them.

If a city area only has new buildings, the enterprises that can exist there are automatically limited to those that can support the high costs of new construction.
...
If you look about, you will see that only operations that are well established, high-turnover, standardized or heavily subsidized can afford, commonly, to carry the costs of new construction. Chain stores, chain restaurants and banks go into new construction. But neighborhood bars, foreign restaurants and pawn shops go into older buildings. Supermarkets and shoe stores often go into new buildings. But the unformalized feeders of the arts - studios, galleries, stores for musical instruments and art supplies, backrooms where the low earning power of a seat and a table can absorb uneconomic discussions - these go into old buildings.

From this perspective, there was only one threat to what made San Francisco special, and it came in the form of a planning department permit.
To recapitulate the state of affairs circa 1970, the progrowth coalition had complete command of San Francisco's physical and economic development. The dream of remaking San Francisco into a West Coast Manhattan was rapidly taking solid form as skyscrapers went up, BART tracks were laid, and lands were cleared for redevelopment.

The progrowth regime accomplished much, for better and for worse. It changed the face of San Francisco. In doing so, however, it fostered resistance among those the regime threatened or whose own dreams of the city were ignored. In dialectical fashion, the progrowth regime created the conditions that gave rise to its nemesis, the slow-growth movement.

So now we've got a lot of different coalitions in San Francisco. There's the new-age hippies, the Chinese immigrants, the black community, the El Salvadorians and the Mexicans. There's a new gay and lesbian community in the Castro. And they're all pretty much okay letting each other have their corner of the city, because the balance of power is split and balkanized. None holds enough power to threaten the other. But they all, to varying degrees, feel threatened by development. So they start to organize their opposition to the pro-growth regime.
Baghdad by the Bay is now the Balkans by the Bay. Everything is pluribus, nothing is unum. Hyperpluralism reigns. The city has no natural majority; its majorities are made, not found. That is a key to understanding the city's political culture: Everyone is a minority. That means mutual tolerance is essential, social learning is inevitable, innovation is likely, and democracy is hard work. Economic change has produced social diversity, and social diversity is the root of the city's political culture. One of the controlling objectives of the progressive movement has been to slow the pace of economic change to protect against threats to social diversity. The economic forces that helped create San Francisco's political culture could also destroy it. The first line of defense is the antiregime.

The ultimate function of the antiregime is to protect the community from capital. It is a regime with the "power to" thwart the exercise of power by others in remaking the city. The primary instrument of this power is local government control over land use and development. In San Francisco, these growth controls have achieved unprecedented scope in these types of limits they impose on capital. They are used to suppress, filter, or deflect the potentially destructive forces of market processes on urban life as experienced by people in their homes, neighborhoods, and communities.

Since demand for housing in SF proper isn't really rising all that much due to suburbanization and white flight, shutting down this growth doesn't yet manifest in a visceral way in the form of rising housing prices. The paradigm of supply and demand is theoretical to this coalition because it does not have any tangible consequences. So they reject the theory and get to work passing new legal restrictions on development. They build powerful local interest groups to throw their weight around whenever a new development proposal arises for development in their communities. This policy and organizing infrastructure persists to this day.
But when suburban sprawl in the Bay Area hits the boundaries of the greenbelt and there's no more room to absorb new housing demand in the suburbs, and as the tastes of the American hipster return to the same kinds of cultural amenities Jane Jacobs described above, the equation shifts in a big way. Starting with the first tech boom in the 1990s.
TL;DR: In the postwar era, San Francisco blossoms culturally as an epicenter for radical liberal thought.

Part Four: The Tech Boom and the Rise of the YIMBYs

A major impediment to a more efficient spatial allocation of labor is housing supply constraints. These constraints limit the number of US workers who have access to the most productive of American cities. In general equilibrium, this lowers income and welfare of all US workers.

Jane Jacobs did a really good job explaining why, strictly from a cultural perspective, suburbs suck and cities are awesome. Weirdly for a long time a lot of people thought it was the other way around, but by the 1990s it wasn't cool to be all suburban anymore and it was way more punk rock to be in a city.
So people who worked in Silicon Valley - largely younger people, fresh out of college - started wanting to live in San Francisco and Oakland instead, because the rest of the Bay Area was (and still is) sterile and suburban.
When the personal computer became a household fixture and the internet started reaching the mass market, suddenly there was a lot more money to be made in computers. All of the sudden San Francisco's population went from slowly rising to rising pretty quickly again. In 1990 San Francisco's population was lower than it was in 1950. By 2000 it was higher. By 2010 it was a lot higher. Now it's over 20% higher than it was in 1990.
San Francisco has always been a pretty expensive place to live, but that was mostly because it wasn't that depressed economically, plus it was beautiful from an aesthetic perspective and the weather was pretty much the tits.
All of the sudden, though, it was still beautiful and the weather was still amazing, but it wasn't just "not that depressed economically" anymore. Suddenly it was a straight-up boomtown.
And it still only has a fraction of the population - and, crucially, housing stock - that the Bay Area as a whole does.
So this entire planning and political infrastructure had spent decades building in one direction, where people moving to the Bay Area for work would live in the suburbs. And in response this anti-growth regime of pluralistic populist left-wing hyper-local community groups succeeded in pretty much freezing development by law in San Francisco proper under the assumption that everyone would just go work in Silicon Valley instead. And then the cultural and economic inertia does a 180 on them. Now everyone wants to live in San Francisco even if they have to work somewhere else.
These shifts - some local, some national, some global - have concentrated themselves in an unprecedented way in a city of less than a million people, focused on the tip of a peninsula only 7 miles across. With so little room for these effects to manifest, they manifest with a vengeance. There is nowhere to spread them out across. They hit like a tall glass of Bacardi 151.
What this does to the housing prices is totally predictable.
California’s home prices and rents have risen because housing developers in California’s coastal areas have not responded to economic signals to increase the supply of housing and build housing at higher densities. A collection of factors inhibit developers from doing so. The most significant factors are:
- Community Resistance to New Housing. Local communities make most decisions about housing development.Because of the importance of cities and counties in determining development patterns, how local residents feel about new housing is important. When residents are concerned about new housing, they can use the community’s land use authority to slow or stop housing from being built or require it to be built at lower densities.
- Environmental Reviews Can Be Used to Stop or Limit Housing Development. The California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) requires local governments to conduct a detailed review of the potential environmental effects of new housing construction (and most other types of development) prior to approving it. The information in these reports sometimes results in the city or county denying proposals to develop housing or approving fewer housing units than the developer proposed. In addition, CEQA’s complicated procedural requirements give development opponents significant opportunities to continue challenging housing projects after local governments have approved them.
- Local Finance Structure Favors Nonresidential Development. California’s local government finance structure typically gives cities and counties greater fiscal incentives to approve nonresidential development or lower density housing development. Consequently, many cities and counties have oriented their land use planning and approval processes disproportionately towards these types of developments.
- Limited Vacant Developable Land. Vacant land suitable for development in California coastal metros is extremely limited. This scarcity of land makes it more difficult for developers to find sites to build new housing.

Remember, this is all happening so fast that not only are the institutions built out of the antigrowth regime movement still exerting their power on development, the people who built them are. They're still alive and showing up to community meetings. Remember, if you were 20 in 1975, you're just barely at retirement age now.
It's easy to understand why these people aren't responding to the price signals that are ringing alarm bells to everyone else. If they're renting, they're protected by rent control - their rent price is fixed to a modest cost of living increase as long as they don't move. This means they are totally insulated from a rising rental market, even if the direct consequence of rent control is suppressing supply and causing prices to rise for everyone else.
And if they own instead of rent, wouldn't they be priced out from rising property taxes? Not in California they won't, thanks to Prop 13!*

These economic incentives ensure that their interests remain the same as they were in 1975 - all upside for them to oppose growth, and no downside. And in the face of this economic incentive, even the Fern Gully fairy tale that developers are inherently anti-environment is hardly necessary to get them to support restrictions which have a negative consequence on the environment and the economy:
Not all change is good, but much change is necessary if the world is to become more productive, affordable, exciting, innovative, and environmentally friendly....At a local level, activists oppose change by fighting growth in their own communities. Their actions are understandable, but their local focus equips them poorly to consider the global consequences of their actions. Stopping new development in attractive areas makes housing more expensive for people who don't currently live in those areas. Those higher housing costs in turn make it more expensive for companies to open businesses. In naturally low-carbon-emissions areas, like California, preventing development means pushing it to less environmentally friendly places, like noncoastal California and suburban Phoenix. Local environmentalism is often bad environmentalism.

It's been long enough since the first tech boom, though, that today there are a lot of people for whom these incentives do not align.
If you have to move apartments for whatever reason, you lose rent control.
If you're a newcomer to the city, you never really got it in the first place.
If you're an environmentalist who understands how carbon emissions work, you want to see more sustainable infill.
Or, like me, if you're a native who has all these advantages but still wants the city to be a place where people can come and live and seek prosperity, regardless of their origins, you simply understand that this status quo must be broken.
This is where the YIMBY movement gets its start. The YIMBY movement is nearly global at this point, but the most well-publicized first-movers in the fight got started in San Francisco about 5 years ago.
In San Francisco...things get weird. Here the tech boom is clashing with tough development laws and resentment from established residents who want to choke off growth to prevent further change.
[Sonja] Trauss is the result: a new generation of activist whose pro-market bent is the opposite of the San Francisco stereotypes — the lefties, the aging hippies and tolerance all around.
Ms. Trauss’s cause, more or less, is to make life easier for real estate developers by rolling back zoning regulations and environmental rules. Her opponents are a generally older group of progressives who worry that an influx of corporate techies is turning a city that nurtured the Beat Generation into a gilded resort for the rich.

But the anger she has tapped into is real, reflecting a generational break that pits cranky homeowners and the San Francisco political establishment against a cast of newcomers who are demanding the region make room for them, too.

Many longtime San Franciscans view groups like [the San Francisco Bay Area Renter's Federation (SF BARF)] as yet another example of how the technology industry is robbing San Francisco of its San Francisco-ness. Far from the hippies of the 1960s, many of today’s migrants lean libertarian — drawn by start-up dreams or to work for the likes of Google or Apple, two of the world’s most valuable companies. They tend to share a belief, either idealistically or naïvely, depending on who is judging, that corporations can be a force for social good and change.
But BARF members are so single-minded about housing that they can be hard to label politically. They view San Francisco progressives as, in fact, fundamentally conservative. That is because, to the group members at least, progressive positions on housing seem less about building the city and more about keeping people like them out.

All of the sudden a new coalition starts to form, drawing on the infrastructure of the old pro-growth urban regime and the influence of tech companies and young renters fed up with rising rental prices in the face of the demand.
SF BARF gives way to less eccentric and more mainstream organizations like YIMBY Action. These groups start releasing voter guides and organizing for pro-growth political candidates.
This shift is how San Francisco elected a YIMBY mayor, and how it elected, and then re-elected, the most YIMBY state representative in maybe the whole U.S.
Sen. Wiener's success at the state level has been a major turning point in the YIMBY fight. Escalating these reforms to the state level pulls small cities and towns out of their Prisoner Dilemma, whereby each individual city stands to benefit if everyone else builds housing, but stands to suffer a disproportionate amount of harm in the form of demand on their infrastructure and services if only they do.
He has built a pro-housing coalition with, among others, fellow Bay Area legislators Sen. Nancy Skinner (D - Oakland/Berkeley), Assemblymember David Chiu (D-San Francisco), and Assemblymember Buffy Wicks (D - Oakland/Berkeley). The YIMBY movement in Sacramento is now largely driven by urban Bay Area legislators, pushing against pro-suburb Republicans and substantial anti-gentrification coalitions from the Los Angeles area.
Housing development has accellerated in both San Francisco and Oakland on the back of new-found public support for housing supply growth. I have no reason to doubt this shift will continue as the grip of the old anti-growth regime loosens. It's inevitable once the incentives of the pluralistic components of the political coalitions shift.
Eventually the people with Prop 13 protections will stop owning their homes, one way or another. Eventually the people with pre-tech rents will move and the units will be rented again at market rate.
And when that happens to a large enough degree, the incentives driving the dominant political coalition will shift in earnest towards the evidence-based conclusions of economists and environmentalists. I'd go so far as to say we're past the beginnings of this, and maybe even past the turning point.
But in the mean time, San Francisco is a hotly contested development battlefield.
And to top it all off, if this sudden crunch wasn't already a recipe for capturing the national and global imagination, now it's happening right in front of the people who work at Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and Reddit.
This makes the drama rife for all of us to watch unfold.

Sociologists Predicting Large Shift in Irish Demographics and Politics

Ireland has nearly always been a nation of distinct identities. As philosophical and sociological ideas of the nation-state began to take shape in Europe, Ireland lagged behind its neighbour nations (itself being part of the British Empire until the 20th century), and, as such, many of the issues that remain in Ireland today are issues that many European, and indeed world, nations have dealt with for centuries, the largest and most looming being the question of Northern Ireland. Irish nationalism was late to the party, only really getting going during the Republic's initial independence in the early 20th century, and flaring up once again around 50 years later during the Troubles.
Ireland, as a nation, formed primarily around ethnic Irishmen, relating more to the Gaels and Celts of places such as Scotland or Wales, as well as its distinct Catholic population, ever at odds with the Protestant Anglicans. A significant portion of the Republic remains Catholic, nominally, today, with more than 3/4ths of the population stating themselves as Catholic in the latest census. This, however, has been dropping, not dissimilar to many other European nations.
This analysis has brought some sociologists to predict that, in the next few decades, Ireland (the Republic for certain, but the Isle as a whole is not an unlikely possibility) will follow the trend of historical nations and shed the identity-politic-driven, nationalistic ideas prevalent in Europe during the 19th and 20th centuries. "While efforts to revive Irish culture might not be affected, traditional Irish identities will be dropped", says Dr. Leary McDermott (doctorates in sociology, political science, anthropology, and history), "leading to less of the issues surrounding such items." Dr. McDermott states in his viral treatise, The Once and Future Isle, that the loss of the fervent clinging to items such as Catholic zeal will likely soothe the differences across the border with Northern Ireland.
While many on social media have claimed this as a sign that Reunification may be on the horizon, Dr. McDermott stated on his Twitter page just yesterday that while an easing of religious zeal on the part of the Republic might soothe the tension still present on the Ireland-UK border, "standing political agendas and external affairs will likely hinder such attempts". Nevertheless, McDermott's statements have opened a broader internet discussion revolving around the "Irish identity".

Lost McAlbain Crew Returns After Year-Long Disappearance

After over a year missing, an "exploratory crew", headed by Oisín McAlbain, son of alleged organized crime boss Darragh McAlbain, has appeared once again in Galway. While initially the entire affair made a minor blip in the general media scene, it made waves in the following days after Oisín began to speak of the expedition. According to Mr. McAlbain, the crew sailed west out of Galway, searching for a piece of land Oisín had beached on a year prior after being blown out to sea by a storm. After half a day's trip out west, they encountered the same storm, which caused one of the two vessels the "expedition" had, the St. Brendan to capsize after their second ship, the Green Whale, rammed into it due to low visibility.
McAlbain goes on to claim that once the St. Brendan had been evacuated and all crew moved to the Green Whale, the entire crew was knocked unconscious. McAlbain then claims that the Green Whale was set upon by lights, "almost like ten million fireflies, each of different colours, like reds and greens and pinks and purples", which put the rest of the crew to sleep. Upon waking, the crew found themselves on a sandy shore, completely uninhabited. After a few days' exploration, they claim to have found no evidence of it ever being inhabited. Oisín stated that he had encountered a strange man there during his first trip, but saw no sign of him on the second go-around.
While the full release is much longer, much of it including frankly ridiculous fantasies, including every cliché in the book, from mysterious dreams to bone-chilling howls in the night. Many experts have weighed in, forming a general consensus that the crew likely was blown back east, and landed in Scotland, a claim that the crew vehemently denies. Regardless of truth, the tale is certainly entertaining.

[CONTENT WARNING] A Second Horrific Murder Leaves Garda Síochána Baffled

Following the grisly murder a few years back, many people searched for answers, but neither civilian nor professional efforts were able to find who had committed such as a heinous crime. They were left wanting, and many residents of Cork were scared for their lives as they feared they would be the killer's next target.
Horror would strike again, as it turns out, but this time in the east, as a body was found in Dublin, matching the grotesque nature of the first death. While no photos have been released or leaked, Independent sources within the Garda Síochána have provided a brief description of the scene. Readers are advised that the description is horrific, and should not be read by those with low constitutions weak stomachs.
While these descriptions remain officially unconfirmed, trusted sources state that the dead is an Irish young male, found on the floor of his apartment in a pool of blood. According the source, the body appeared dysmorphic, stretching and blobbing in strange places. An autopsy of the body was performed, and the coroner discovered that the man's skeleton was somehow, without ever breaking the skin, flipped all the way around. This resulted in the feet of the skeleton being inside the man's skull, while the skull was split (almost perfectly) in half, with each half inside the "legs" of the skin. Doctors are completely baffled.
Officers are baffled, as well. According to the source, no current leads exist, as with the Cork murder. It is being added to a growing case at the situation unfolds, the Independent will continue to report as everything is brought to light.

A who’s who of the Aprils in Abaddon universe

It’s been a while since I’ve posted, but I hope this is worth the wait. Essentially, this is a biographical encyclopedia of every major character I’ve introduced to the Aprils in Abaddon lore, plus a few new ones to round it out.
I’ve split this into four sections for easier navigation (which it sorely needs—clocking in at 17 pages on google docs, this is the longest thing I’ve ever posted, no question). The first consists of five long-form biographies of characters I thought were particularly interesting. They aren’t necessarily the most significant characters from the lore, but I felt they were the ones with the most interesting stories to tell. The second is a list of shorter entries formatted in bulleted lists. Everyone here is reasonably important, but I didn’t feel there was enough there to warrant writing out a longer biography just yet. The third is filled with the characters which are, at least for now, the least significant on the list; those I mostly introduced as filler names and haven’t elaborated on since. They get about a line of context each. Finally, there’s a section dedicated to real-life individuals who have played a role in the story so far, using the same bulleted list format as section two to briefly explain how their lives have been different in Aprils in Abaddon compared to our own timeline. I had to split this fourth section from the rest for length reasons, so it’ll be pinned at the top of the comment section.
(Note: I tried to keep the first three categories in order of appearance, and the fourth in approximately chronological order. There may be some errors, if so, my apologies.)
Characters from the lower categories may one day graduate to the first one. As I further explore the events in France, for example, Hugo Bachelot, Adeline Brodeur and company may be given the long-form biography treatment, and as I flesh out the situation in India, Amoli Malhotra may move from a filler name in the third section to a fully realized character in the first. But that’s for another time and another post. For now, I’ve restricted myself to a few in-depth stories focused on the American left.

Liam Sutton, supreme commander of the Eastern American Worker’s Army and Chairman of the American Labor Congress, was born into a working-class family in northeastern Illinois on the twelfth of June, 1979. His father was a mechanic, his mother a waitress, neither had attended college, and both were the children of Irish immigrants. He graduated from high school in May of 1997 and, being unable to afford college, went to work in his father’s shop. When the September 11th attacks occurred, he enlisted in the Army and was shipped off to Saudi Arabia later that year.
Sutton’s time in the military irreversibly changed him. While on tour with local militia forces near Wadi ad-Dawasir, he grew acquainted with an Arab man named Ahmad Nazari, a schoolteacher-turned militant who introduced him to the writings of Marx. Over the course of his deployment, he was gradually radicalized, first by his interactions with Nazari, and then by critically examining his own experiences in the Middle East. He was honorably discharged from the military in 2004 after losing a finger and the use of his left ear to an IED, by which point he was a dedicated communist.
Sutton’s family had lost the auto shop to foreclosure while he was away, leaving them at the mercy of the minimum wage, his mother working her old job as a waitress and his father taking a position as a custodian at a local school. Sutton moved to Chicago to work the line at a factory outside the city, and spent nearly six months sleeping in his car, showering at a local public gym, and sending most of his paycheck back to his parents to pay off their growing debts. It was during this period of time he became active as a union organizer, participating in strikes in 2005 and again in 2006, both of which failed to secure higher wages. Once he managed to secure an apartment and had enough in his bank account to stay alive between paychecks, he began taking night classes at a nearby college with the help of the GI bill. Though removed from the standard campus environment, he eventually fell into circles of younger anti-war students, some of whom were equally radical in their beliefs, and began making a name for himself in the city’s youth political scene as someone in the unusual position of being a vocally anti-war, anti-capitalist veteran.
His involvement in anti-war student organizations and union activities led him to further political activity in and around the 2008 election. He briefly drifted into the orbit of Mike Gravel’s Green Party campaign, though he never officially joined the party. In the aftermath of Cheney’s victory, his union participated in the Blue Movement, trying to elect social democrats and labor activists to local offices and Congress with the Democratic Party as a vessel, and because of the reputation he had cultivated since returning from the Army, he ended up on the Illinois Organizing Committee. Several years later, as the organization disintegrated, he found himself one of the ranking members of the movement’s national leadership, which is what eventually got him into the Fifth International. In the intervening years, he used his various positions within the organization as a platform from which to voice more radical ideas, sending young progressive Democrats down the social democrat-to-communist pipeline.
Prior to his career in the AWA, Sutton was most famous for his coining of the term “preventative weaponization,” a practice which would eventually be used by groups affiliated with the Fifth International in the years leading up to the war. The idea held that leftists organizations should engage in mass buyouts of guns and ammunition in the weeks immediately preceding planned demonstrations, for the dual purpose of decreasing the chance of right-wing attacks and creating a large communal stockpile of firepower to better arm the left. While its success in achieving the first objective is questionable (if anything, the far right simply began hoarding ammunition in greater quantities and for longer), it certainly hit the mark on the second one. The guns and ammunition bought during mass buyouts from 2013-2016 were all put to good use in the February Revolt and beyond, and the gun clubs created to give leftists basic firearm training would eventually form the backbone of the AWA.
By 2016, Liam was one of the most well-known leftists in America. He was active in the Fifth International as an unaffiliated delegate and a close confidant of Richard Trumka, whom he radicalized over the course of a long correspondence after the two met in 2013. He often drew hostility from the mainstream media with brash public statements which occasionally brought him within inches of serving jail time. He once infamously suggested that “perhaps the good men and women of Congress would have a greater sense of urgency about all this”—referring to the government shutdown of 2014-2015—“if they found themselves up against a wall.” Amidst the unrest following the fatal shooting of Jeff Bezos, Trumka asked him to begin clandestinely organizing a militia of revolutionary leftists. Months later, operating under the title of the American Worker’s Army, this militia mobilized, and the rest is history.
Sutton assumed command of the AWA as leading Liberator-General, a rank intended for up to eight individuals across the country, but, owing to the February Revolt’s relative successes and failures by region, only conveyed to two—himself and Salvador Gutierrez. Though the two cooperated for some time, by early 2018 their ideological and personal disagreements grew too great, and the AWA split in two. Today, Sutton holds nearly complete martial and political command over the Eastern AWA, which he is gradually reshaping to fit his vision of an ideal Marxist-Leninist state.
Salvador Gutierrez
Born: 5 September 1974, San Jose, California

Before he was a Liberator-General in the American Worker’s Army, and before he was a revolutionary of any kind, Salvador Gutierrez was a boy from San Jose. His childhood was not a conventional one. His father was a deadbeat and his mother died in childbirth, so he spent his adolescence with his aunt and uncle. Although he was not yet explicitly an anarchist, he started down the anti-establishment path early, beginning with his family’s eviction from their home in 1988, forcing them into months of unstable housing arrangements. He went to college on a robust scholarship after a strong academic performance in high school despite working nearly full-time from the age of 14 on, and while there, he began experimenting with leftist ideas, first becoming a social democrat and then an outright socialist. Unfortunately, he lost his scholarship and was expelled as a sophomore over a minor drug charge, but rather than move back home, he moved in with Alan Wheeler, a recent graduate and minor acquaintance of his who had drifted through the same circles as Salvador during his experimentation with leftism. In the ten months they spent as roommates, Alan introduced Gutierrez to anarchist theory, converting him into a lifelong anarcho-communist.
The mid-to-late 90s were rough for Gutierrez. In early 1995, he was arrested on another drug charge, and this time it landed him in court facing a five-year prison sentence. He was found guilty and served all five years, denied parole due to a handful of physical altercations with white supremacist inmates. When he got out in 2000, Alan, who now lived in Seattle, invited him back to live with him again until he got back on his feet. He took him up on the offer and began working with the growing number of leftists in Seattle during the early days of the Gore administration. Naturally, he flung himself into the anti-war movement after the invasion of Saudi Arabia, and became involved in labor unionism around the same time, helping to organize his fellow retail workers to demand better hours and wages.
Salvador’s first big move in the labor world happened in 2003, around the time of the collapse of the Saudi government and the rise of Al-Wartha. He was one of the major Pacific Northwest-area organizers of the Strike for Peace movement, a socialist-lead strike against the wars in Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan that demanded a withdrawal of troops from abroad, along with a number of systemic changes, like outlawing military recruitment on college and high school campuses, dissolving the ROTC, and cutting the military budget by 25%. The strike was ultimately a failure; while radical unionists and small numbers of wildcat strikers supported it, big unions like the AFL-CIO voted against it, and their workers ended up acting as strikebreakers, ending the movement before it really got off the ground. In an interview some time after the strike, the defeated Gutierrez, angry at the liberal unions for their role in defending the establishment, coined a phrase that would become something of a rallying cry for socialists in the 2000s and early 2010s: “Before there can be a revolution by the unions, there must be a revolution among the unions.”
Following this maxim, Gutierrez became increasingly radical in his assessment of revolutionary tactics, to match the radical positions on politics he had assumed years earlier. He joined the IWW, which helped to boost the union’s profile, and then set out on a path of convincing unionized workers to abandon their moderate, trade-specific unions and join up as well, starting with the local retail union he had helped form back in his early activist days. Over the 2000s, the IWW’s membership ballooned, a trend that would later continue and even accelerate under the Cheney administration, and as it grew, so too did his renown as an organizer and aspiring revolutionary. Aside from his activities in the IWW, he was also instrumental in the formation of the Farm & Field Labor Alliance, a leftist federation of farm workers’ unions and associations of small farm owners that aimed to fight the corporatization of the agriculture industry. With his support, the Alliance grew into a real threat to liberal agricultural unions like the UFW, eventually even supplanting it as the dominant organizer of labor in that sector. The mass resignation of UFW members, causing some locals to dissolve entirely, is widely considered the “spark” which incited the AFL-CIO’s sudden leftwards slide as it scrambled to accommodate the shifting winds of public opinion. The Federation eventually moved so far left that it ejected police unions from its ranks and began electing outspoken socialists to high posts—in a sense, the “revolution among the unions” was brought to fruition.
Gutierrez represented the IWW in the Fifth International when it first convened in 2013. By this point he was, like Sutton, one of the most famous leftists in America, and increasingly famous around the world. With his guidance, the IWW had led the way in the Great Transport Strike of 2011, and his role in the foundation of the F&FLA, and subsequently in pushing the AFL-CIO from its position of liberalism to something approximating socialism, was well-acknowledged in leftist circles. So it was no great surprise when he was elected Chairman of the International in its second congress, nor was it, to those who were privy to such information, when Sutton tapped him to be one of the Liberator-Generals under his command during the formation of the AWA. In fact, it was assumed he would be Sutton’s de facto second-in-command, an assumption which, for a time, proved to be correct, if only because he was the only person left to fill such a position come March 2017.
Following the schism of the AWA, Gutierrez took sole command of the army’s western forces and began to reorganize them in a way more in tune with his anarchist ideals. The rigid chain of command was somewhat relaxed, and the army as a whole was segmented into a more locally-organized, cell-like structure. Today, he continues to command the Western AWA when such direct leadership is necessary, and perhaps more importantly, he provides moral and ideological guidance for it and like-minded leftists everywhere.

As has often happened throughout history, when the critical hour arrived for the Bronx Commune, it was regular people who stepped up to do what had to be done. By all accounts, Nariah Harris was such a person. She lived a relatively normal life up until the outbreak of the war; she was born in a working-class household in the Bronx, went to school a few miles away, and attended a community college a few miles further when she graduated, majoring in business (which her future comrades would note was a bit ironic). When she lost her job in the crash of 2008, she helped organize councils of the unemployed in the Bronx to fight for better unemployment benefits. The councils grew into something of a phenomenon in 2008 and 2009, expanding to the other boroughs to become the New York Homeless & Unemployed Committees of Correspondence, but although there was some socialist agitation, the organization itself was not especially radical, and neither was Nariah at this point. Nor was she a high-profile figure: when more than 7,000 unemployed people marched from Times Square to Wall Street in November of 2009, arguably the NYHUCC’s crowning achievement, she wasn’t even mentioned by name as one of the event’s organizers by news outlets covering it. By mid-2010, the fervor surrounding the Committees had faded, and by the end of the year the constituent councils had gone their separate ways. It seemed that Nariah would remain in the footnotes of history, if that.
On the eve of the Second American Civil War, Harris was doing nothing of note. She had not been active in any organizations affiliated with the Fifth International, or, for that matter, in any political organizations since 2010, so she had no connections to the infant AWA, and no foreknowledge of what was just around the corner. As far as she was concerned, the sixth of February, 2017 was simply another day of unrest in a long series of days of unrest, notable only for the crisis in Texas happening at the same time. The seemingly spontaneous mobilization of the AWA caught her, as it did many others, by surprise.
Though she was by no means a trained radical, Nariah had lived through the failure of the American economy firsthand. Not only had she been unemployed for almost a year during the last financial crash, but she had also worked a dead-end job in the service industry for more than eight years since then, struggling to pay for basic amenities without falling behind on rent. So perhaps it had something to do with the spontaneity of it all, or perhaps it was the result of anger that had been brewing for almost a decade, but when AWA rebels laid attacked police stations and banks in the Bronx, she took to the streets with them, and when they put a gun in her hands and asked her to mount a barricade, she did so without hesitation.
Nariah stumbled into the role of a revolutionary fighter, but as it turned out, she was quite good at it, and purely by being in the right place at the right time, she stumbled further into the role of captain of a neighborhood company, and then, as the AWA’s grip on New York slipped, commander-elect of the newly independent Bronx Commune.
As often as the more experienced veterans of the AWA complained that they had been passed over in the process of selecting a leader in favor of a newcomer to the cause, Harris took on the burden of leadership about as well as anyone could be expected to, under the circumstances. She oversaw the transformation of the Bronx into an urban garden, and managed the defense of the borough against a far larger, better-armed, and more well-supplied enemy. Ultimately, of course, the Commune did not last. Already on its last legs by the 27th of April, it was dealt a death blow when Nariah was captured by government forces in the basement of a bombed-out high school.
Nariah spent the next several months being moved from one holding facility to another in anticipation of her trial, where she was brought up on charges of treason, conspiracy against the United States, sedition, and accessory to murder. The first jury, whose members were sympathetic to the Bronx Commune, refused to convict her with the knowledge she would be executed, and had to be dismissed. After much deliberation, the judge moved to have her sentence reduced to life without the possibility of parole to accelerate the process and prevent the trial from becoming the focal point of further unrest, and with reluctance from some of its members, the second jury went through with the sentencing. For the past three years, Nariah has been held at the Bedford Hills maximum security prison, where she will remain for the rest of her life, barring an unexpected change in circumstances. In her absence, she has become a sort of mythic figure for the American left. Murals in her honor have been painted, scrubbed off by the authorities, and painted again all across New York. Both AWAs, no longer at odds with her or the late Commune, hold annual vigils in her honor. Once not even considered worth mentioning, her name alone now conjures up revolutionary spirit in the hearts and minds of millions.
Joshua Washington

Joshua Washington hails from a long tradition of radicalism. His parents met as members of the Communist Party USA, remaining active members throughout the 80s and 90s. His grandfather on his mother’s side, who was involved with the original Black Panthers in the 60s, lived the latter half of his life under an assumed identity to avoid prison after defying his draft notice in ‘67. In diametric opposition to Liam Sutton, who was raised a conservative and grew to be a revolutionary, Joshua was raised to be a revolutionary, and did not disappoint as he grew older.
His first foray into revolutionary activism was in 2009, the year he turned eighteen. On the heels of Louis Farrakhan’s death and the ensuing unrest, Joshua was one of thousands of left-wing youths who joined the New Black Panther Party in search of solidarity, an influx of new membership which would eventually push the reactionary elements out of the party’s ranks and transform it into a leftist organization. Eschewing traditional higher education, he instead flung himself into organizing full-time, guiding himself through the works of Marx along the way, as well as those of Lenin, Mao, Fanon, DuBois, and a host of others.
By the time it entered the Fifth International in 2014, the NBPP was a thoroughly communist organization, the established right-wing currents having splintered off to form their own groups while the Marxist newcomers came to dominate. Among these newcomers was Joshua. At a mere twenty-three years old, he was the face of the Party’s first delegation to the International, and the following year, he was made Chairperson.
Through his Fifth International connections, Washington began moving in the same circles as people like Sutton, Gutierrez, and Trumka. Under his leadership, the NBPP worked closely with the Socialist Rifle Association and smaller leftist gun clubs like the Friends of John Brown to coordinate buyouts and train leftists en masse. Like Gutierrez, he was intended to be one of the Liberator-Generals of the infant AWA, responsible for managing the revolution in the southeastern US, but he was arrested in Atlanta shortly after the Bezos riots for violating a number of firearms laws and allegedly inciting violence, and thus was unable to take command. He remained in jail without trial until rebels freed him during the February Revolt. Rather than flee to the countryside like many others did as federal forces retook control of Atlanta, he chose to remain in the city in hiding, and miraculously, managed to stay a step ahead of law enforcement until the next major wave of unrest struck the south in 2018.
During the southern insurrections of mid-2018, the southern chapters of the NBPP mobilized against both the government and the right-wing separatists who had initiated the conflict. Joshua chose to come out of hiding at this point, and publicly take command of the Party. Though it met with early successes in urban areas, it was outmatched by reactionary forces, the increasingly powerful Sons of the South being the most pressing concern, and was eventually forced to merge with the right-wing groups it had parted ways with years ago for the sake of survival. The synthesis of the socialist and racial separatist currents of the black militant movement produced the African People’s Guard, which still exists today, having managed to weather the Sons’ assaults and held control of Atlanta throughout. Joshua Washington remains its leading general, holding the line against the forces of white supremacy even with the enemy at the gates.
Edna Heel

For generations, the Heel family has been intimately aware of the realities of life below the poverty line. Edna Heel’s ancestors were tenant farmers, textile mill workers, railway men, miners, and about as often as they were any of those things, they were unemployed. She was raised in a trailer park in the western hinterlands of North Carolina, her parents having lost the meager land they had accumulated with years of scraped-together savings and shaky loans to the clutches of the banks and the growing class of corporate farmers. The anger at the system that would one day express itself in her formation and leadership of the National Revolutionary Guard was always there, even in her childhood, merely unrefined, unnamed.
By the turn of the 21st century, Edna already had a bitter decade and a half in an industrial poultry farm behind her, but thus far no political experience whatsoever. Her first glimpse into that world came in the form of Saul Burke, a tractor mechanic from Iowa and the founder of the fledgling Farm & Field Labor Alliance. The two met in 2005 while Saul was touring the south with a small band of socialists and trade unionists, hoping to drum up interest for the FFLA outside of the Midwest. He succeeded with Edna, and then some. She thrust herself into organizational roles in the Alliance, helping to cultivate a strong, radical labor movement in Appalachia. When labor unrest swept the nation in the 2010s, her voice was among the loudest, using every platform available to call for the redistribution of land and wealth, the destruction of the banking system, and, as plainly as she could say it without being imprisoned, the overthrow of capitalism.
As she became more politically active, her politics became more developed. On her journey through the canons of Marxist and anarchist literature, she drifted more towards the Marxist camp, specifically the Marxist-Leninist current, and then even more specifically towards the Maoist subset of that current. With neither a college degree nor a high school diploma, it was painstaking work, but in 2010 she released her first contribution to leftist theory, and, according to most, her defining work. Titled Peasants: Class in the Country, it delved into what Heel saw as the position of the rural poor not just in American capitalism, but in global capitalist imperialism (she had lost friends to the wars in the Middle East, and to the opioid crisis as well—something she connected to the US interests in the opium industry in Afghanistan). It also outlined what she called “Rational Maoism,” her take on the teachings of Mao and Gonzalo, which included a more critical approach to past Maoist movements like the Shining Path, tentative support for modern China, and a rejection of J. Sakai’s white labor aristocracy theory.
Edna was one of the dominant leftist figures in the south by late 2016, so when Joshua Washington was arrested, the mantle of being the region’s Liberator-General passed to her. The task of leading a successful revolution in an area as traditionally conservative as the southeast was a daunting one, and when the dust settled, it was one she failed to accomplish. But this failure was temporary. When order broke down in 2018, like Washington and the NBPP, Heel and her loose network of revolutionaries in the FFLA, the Friends of John Brown, and the remnants of the regional AWA seized the opportunity to take a second chance at revolution. The result was the National Revolutionary Guard, a rural-based Maoist army which managed to capture a strip of territory from northwest Georgia to northeast Tenneseee before being beaten back to two separate bases of power centered around Chattanooga and Newport. The NRG has withstood the assaults of the Sons of the South and other right-wing organizations since then, and inspired a similar uprising in Florida, forming the organization’s southern branch with the help of foreign socialist powers. At the moment, Heel is the supreme political and military leader of the NRG, chairing the People’s Congress, the National Standing Committee, and the Central Military Committee. Though smaller than either branch of the AWA, the Guard plays a major role in the martial situation in the south and in modern leftist politics as a whole.

20th Century Church Atrocities
Supposedly to fight communism, thousands of buddhist protesters and monks were imprisoned in "detention camps." Out of protest dozens of buddhist teachers - male and female - and monks poured gasoline over themselves and burned themselves. (Note that Buddhists burned themselves: in comparison Christians tend to burn others). Meanwhile some of the prison camps, which in the meantime were filled with Protestant and even Catholic protesters as well, had turned into no-nonsense death camps. It is estimated that during this period of terror (1955-1960) at least 24,000 were wounded - mostly in street riots - 80,000 people were executed, 275,000 had been detained or tortured, and about 500,000 were sent to concentration or detention camps. [MW76-89]. To support this kind of government in the next decade thousands of American GI's lost their life....
For quite some time I heard only rumours about Catholic clergy actively involved in the 1994 Rwanda massacres. Odd denials of involvement were printed in Catholic church journals, before even anybody had openly accused members of the church. Then, 10/10/96, in the newscast of S2 Aktuell, Germany - a station not at all critical to Christianity - the following was stated: "Anglican as well as Catholic priests and nuns are suspect of having actively participated in murders. Especially the conduct of a certain Catholic priest has been occupying the public mind in Rwanda's capital Kigali for months. He was minister of the church of the Holy Family and allegedly murdered Tutsis in the most brutal manner. He is reported to have accompanied marauding Hutu militia with a gun in his cowl. In fact there has been a bloody slaughter of Tutsis seeking shelter in his parish. Even two years after the massacres many Catholics refuse to set foot on the threshold of their church, because to them the participation of a certain part of the clergy in the slaughter is well established. There is almost no church in Rwanda that has not seen refugees - women, children, old - being brutally butchered facing the crucifix. According to eyewitnesses clergymen gave away hiding Tutsis and turned them over to the machetes of the Hutu militia. In connection with these events again and again two Benedictine nuns are mentioned, both of whom have fled into a Belgian monastery in the meantime to avoid prosecution. According to survivors one of them called the Hutu killers and led them to several thousand people who had sought shelter in her monastery. By force the doomed were driven out of the churchyard and were murdered in the presence of the nun right in front of the gate. The other one is also reported to have directly cooperated with the murderers of the Hutu militia. In her case again witnesses report that she watched the slaughtering of people in cold blood and without showing response. She is even accused of having procured some petrol used by the killers to set on fire and burn their victims alive..." [S2]
